Jon Cryer said he and Andrew McCarthy clashed while filming Pretty in Pink, calling McCarthy a “d—.” McCarthy agreed when Cryer recounted it at a June 2024 screening and Q&A for Brats, his documentary about the actors associated with the 1980s “Brat Pack” label.
What Jon Cryer said about Andrew McCarthy
“When we had done ‘Pretty in Pink’ together, we did not get along because he was a d—,” Cryer said at the Brats event, according to the Los Angeles Times. The report censors the insult; it does not print the word uncensored. McCarthy replied, “That’s very true.”

The exchange took place during a screening and Q&A for Brats, McCarthy’s documentary about the performers linked to the “Brat Pack” label. The People report also covered the remarks.
How they were connected in Pretty in Pink
John Hughes wrote the 1986 film, which starred Molly Ringwald as Andie, Cryer as Duckie, and McCarthy as Blane. Cryer and McCarthy therefore played characters in the same teenage romance, even though their relationship off camera was strained at the time.

They had reconciled before the Brats Q&A
Their on-set friction was not the end of their relationship. The Los Angeles Times reports that McCarthy apologized when the two met in a greenroom at The View in 2012. Cryer later described the encounter as warm, saying it was clear in that moment that their teenage conflict did not define who they were as adults.

Brats examines the lasting effects of the “Brat Pack” label on the actors associated with it. McCarthy also wrote about the period in his memoir Brat: An ’80s Story, which The New Yorker discusses in the context of his perspective on the group and the era.
