King Charles III said his cancer-treatment schedule could be reduced in the new year, in a recorded message broadcast during Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer telethon on 12 December 2025. Buckingham Palace described the next phase as precautionary and said his condition would continue to be monitored. The announcement was not a declaration that he was in remission or had finished treatment.
What did King Charles say about his cancer treatment?
The King said early diagnosis and intervention, together with following medical advice, had made it possible for his treatment schedule to be reduced in the new year. He did not say that treatment would stop. In the message, he described receiving a cancer diagnosis as overwhelming and said, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.”
Buckingham Palace characterized the forthcoming phase as precautionary, with monitoring continuing. That wording describes a planned adjustment and ongoing oversight; it does not establish that the cancer has gone or that treatment is complete.
What type of cancer does King Charles have?
The Palace has not publicly identified the type of cancer or the treatment. When the diagnosis was announced on 5 February 2024, the Palace said tests had identified a form of cancer after a procedure for benign prostate enlargement, but did not name it. The Palace explained that withholding the King’s specific condition was intentional: its advice from cancer experts was that he should address people affected by all forms of the disease.

What happened when the diagnosis was announced?
On 5 February 2024, Buckingham Palace said diagnostic tests had identified cancer following the King’s procedure for benign prostate enlargement. It said he would begin regular treatment and postpone public-facing duties, while continuing state business and official paperwork. The announcement distinguished the cancer finding from the earlier prostate condition; it did not specify the cancer.
How the December 2025 update connects to screening
The King used his experience to encourage people to consider cancer screening programmes. In Britain, the examples reported by the Associated Press were breast, bowel and cervical screening. His message was a general appeal to consider screening, not individualized advice about which test any particular person should have.

AP reported that about 100,000 people had visited Cancer Research UK’s Screening Checker since its launch on 5 December 2025, with most visits occurring after the King’s message. That figure describes visits to the charity’s online checker, not completed screenings or a general measure of screening uptake. Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell said public figures speaking about their diagnoses can prompt others to check on their health.
