Katy Perry’s final season as an American Idol judge was season 22, which aired in 2024 and marked the end of her seven-season run on the panel. She had announced before the season began that she expected to leave, and as the finale approached she acknowledged how hard the goodbye would be. The available reporting supports the emotional farewell, though it does not identify a specific episode or image as the moment in which she cried.
Why was Katy Perry leaving American Idol?
Perry announced her plan in February 2024 during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!: “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for ‘Idol,’” ABC News reported. She said she loved the show but wanted to tour, see the world and possibly release new music. She described wanting to “go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.” ABC News’ February 2024 report covered the announcement.
Season 22 was Perry’s seventh season on the judging panel. Her departure was presented as a choice to focus on her own music and touring, rather than as a consequence of a dispute with the show.
What did Perry say about the goodbye?
In the weeks around the finale, Perry reflected on what her time on Idol had meant to her. Good Morning America reported that she said the experience had “healed my heart” and characterized her departure as goodbye “for now,” leaving open the possibility that she might return. Those brief excerpts were reported by Good Morning America.

How did the season 22 farewell end?
