Joe Flaherty, the comedian and actor known for SCTV and Freaks and Geeks, died April 1, 2024, at 82. His daughter, Gudrun Flaherty, said he had been ill briefly; no specific cause of death was reported. Flaherty helped bring the Toronto branch of The Second City to life, became a founding cast member of SCTV and later played family patriarch Harold Weir on NBC’s Freaks and Geeks.
What happened to Joe Flaherty?
Flaherty died on April 1, 2024, his daughter said in a statement reported by the Associated Press. She described a brief illness, but reports did not identify a diagnosis or provide further medical details. His daughter remembered him as “an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s.” (Associated Press; The Guardian)
How did Flaherty become an ‘SCTV’ star?
Born in Pittsburgh, Flaherty spent seven years performing at The Second City in Chicago before moving to Toronto in 1973 to help establish the company’s Canadian outpost. He became a founding cast member of Second City Television, or SCTV, a sketch-comedy series presented as programming from a fictional local station in Melonville. The show ran from 1976 to 1984, according to The Guardian.
His memorable characters
- Guy Caballero: The station’s cigar-smoking boss, who used a wheelchair despite being able to walk.
- Count Floyd: A vampire-themed host of the station’s horror-movie program.
- Other roles: Flaherty also played characters including Floyd Robertson and Sammy Maudlin, and performed impressions of figures such as Richard Nixon, Alan Alda and Kirk Douglas.
Flaherty’s work on SCTV extended beyond performing: the Associated Press reported that he won two Emmy Awards for writing on the series, in 1982 and 1983. Castmate Martin Short later recalled that the troupe called him “the anchor,” praising his skill in improvisation and character work. (Associated Press; The Guardian)

Who was Harold Weir in ‘Freaks and Geeks’?
Flaherty played Harold Weir, the father of Lindsay Weir, played by Linda Cardellini, and Sam Weir, played by John Francis Daley, in Freaks and Geeks. The NBC comedy-drama aired in 1999–2000 and had one season of 18 episodes. Its family scenes gave Flaherty a very different setting from SCTV: instead of building a parade of sketch characters, he played a recurring father in an ensemble story about teenagers and their families. What movies and other shows featured Joe Flaherty?
Among Flaherty’s best-known film appearances were brief but distinctive comic roles. In Back to the Future Part II (1989), he played the Western Union man who delivers a letter. In Happy Gilmore (1996), he was Donald, the heckler who provokes Adam Sandler’s golfer. He also appeared as a border guard in Stripes. These are selected credits, not a complete filmography. Flaherty could make a character feel specific whether he was playing the proprietor of a fictional television station, a horror host or an ordinary suburban father. That range connects his sketch-comedy legacy to the quieter role many viewers encountered in Freaks and Geeks. In a 2012 interview quoted by the Los Angeles Times, he described the series this way: “But this show really was. It was all about characters, and behavior, and relationships.”
