Diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumour in January 2024, she used photography to pursue a bucket list of opportunities that reached well beyond that royal occasion.
Who was Liz Hatton?
Hatton was a teenage photographer whose family helped her seek out photographic opportunities after her diagnosis. Her mother, Vicky Robayna, described her as determined. When Robayna announced her death, she wrote: “Our incredible daughter Liz died in the early hours of this morning. She remained determined to the last.” ITV reported her announcement on 28 November 2024.
How did she meet Kate Middleton?
On 2 October 2024, Hatton was invited to photograph an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, where she met Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales. Catherine is often known publicly as Kate Middleton. The meeting was a single public encounter; the reports do not establish a longstanding personal relationship.
Afterward, the couple praised Hatton in a message shared through their official social accounts: “A talented young photographer whose creativity and strength has inspired us both.” Hatton wrote that they were “Such lovely, genuine and kind people,” and said she was “over the moon” that her family had shared the experience. ITV reported on the Windsor visit and messages on 3 October 2024.

What did Hatton photograph?
The Windsor investiture was one part of a wider bucket list. Accounts of her pursuits describe work involving performers, the Royal Ballet and the London Air Ambulance, as well as a fashion shoot with photographer Rankin. CBS also reported ambitions that included a major West End musical, London Fashion Week, music festivals and professional models; the list welcomed other photography opportunities too. CBS reported on the list on 3 October 2024. Sky News described some of her photography work after her death.
Her diagnosis and death

How her family remembered her
On 11 December 2024, ITV reported that Hatton’s family held a celebration of her life in Harrogate rather than a funeral. The gathering included an exhibition of 50 of her photographs. Her family also promoted research funding for the rare tumour. ITV reported at the time that their fundraising target was £100,000 and that £40,000 had been raised; those figures describe the December 2024 report, not a current fundraising balance. ITV reported on the family celebration and fundraiser on 11 December 2024.
The same retrospective said the tumour was diagnosed in 12 people each year and that 15% of patients survive beyond five years. Those figures were reported by ITV in 2024 and are not independently confirmed here. The ITV report gives the figures and its account of Hatton’s illness.
