The preview anticipated overseas travel, including Rome, and continuing work on homelessness, the Earthshot Prize and early childhood. Catherine’s cancer treatment and recovery changed the year’s public schedule; she later returned selectively to public events.
What the December 2023 preview expected
The PEOPLE article, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, described plans the couple had reportedly finalized for much of the first half of 2024. Its claims should be read as a forward-looking report, not as confirmed dates or a complete official itinerary. Read the December 28, 2023 preview.
- Overseas travel: Rome, Italy, was reported as a possible destination. The article did not establish a confirmed public itinerary.
- William’s work: He was expected to continue Homewards, his homelessness initiative, and promote the fourth Earthshot Prize.
- Catherine’s work: She was expected to continue Shaping Us, her early-childhood initiative, with additional attention to how businesses could support families with young children.
- Joint duties: The preview anticipated continued support for King Charles III and Queen Camilla, including joint appearances.
- Prince George’s schooling: The article speculated about boarding school, naming Eton and Marlborough as possibilities. It did not report a confirmed decision.
What happened to the expected schedule
The year did not proceed as a routine calendar of public appearances. In its 2023–24 financial report, the Royal Household said Catherine had temporarily stepped back from public-facing duties to prioritise treatment and recovery. The report also said the King temporarily stepped back from public duties while prioritising treatment and recovery. The Royal Household’s 2023–24 financial reports.
In March 2024, a UK Ministry of Defence notice suggested Catherine would attend Trooping the Colour. That notice was not confirmation from Kensington Palace. The Associated Press reported that the palace had not confirmed scheduled public events for her and that palace officials, rather than government departments, confirm royal attendance. Catherine’s public return in 2024
AP’s retrospective timeline records several important milestones in Catherine’s return to public duties:
- June 15: She attended Trooping the Colour with William and their children.
- July 14: She presented the Wimbledon trophy to Carlos Alcaraz.
- September 9: She said she had finished chemotherapy and expected to undertake a few more public engagements as she continued to recover.
These events show a selective return, not a resumption of the broad schedule forecast in December. See AP’s timeline of Catherine’s 2024 milestones.

Did Kate and William travel to Rome in 2024?
The preview reported Rome as a destination the couple might visit, but the sources available here do not establish whether a Rome trip was completed, formally scheduled or rescheduled. It is therefore not possible to say from this evidence that the trip happened—or to assign a reason for its status.

For completed engagements, consult the Court Circular, which the Royal Household describes as its official record of past royal engagements, with searchable entries dating back to 1997. Search the Court Circular. For future appearances, distinguish a palace confirmation from a media expectation or an announcement by another government body; the March Trooping the Colour notice illustrates why the source of a claim matters.
