The edit pairs it with a nightclub scene from the Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, turning a moment of release into a viral reaction meme.
What is the song in the Jon Hamm TikTok?
It is “Turn The Lights Off” by Danish DJ and producer KATO and singer Jon Nørgaard. The version now used in the meme is a dance track released in 2010, and an interpretation of an earlier DJ Jose release from 2007, according to Headliner. Billboard Canada and GAFFA also identify the KATO and Nørgaard track as a 2010 release (Billboard Canada; GAFFA). The commonly repeated 2009 date is not supported by those reports.
Where does the video come from?
The visual is a nightclub scene featuring Jon Hamm as Andrew Cooper in Your Friends & Neighbors. In the social-media edit, “Turn The Lights Off” replaces the music heard in the original scene: “Sentient System” by Joseph William Morgan, as Billboard reports (Billboard Canada; Billboard, Dec. 17, 2025 PDF copy).
Creators use the juxtaposition as a reaction: a small pleasure, a moment of relief or a temporary escape can be framed as an ecstatic release. The replacement music is central to the joke and mood; it is not the song heard in the show’s original scene.

How did the song go viral?
KATO told Headliner that he began noticing Ukrainian Instagram accounts tagging him in posts using the song, followed by Russian profiles and listening activity he associated with Ukraine, Russia, Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. In his account, that social use started before the Jon Hamm meme; the meme then accelerated the track’s reach. He recalled, “It was actually a really positive message when it started there. Then it really took off when the Jon Hamm thing started somewhere, and within a day or two, it was everywhere” (Headliner).
That is KATO’s description of what he observed, not a verified origin story. The reporting does not establish the first post or identify the person who began the trend. KATO said he initially wondered whether his account had been hacked or the attention was a prank: “I honestly thought someone had hacked my account or that it was some kind of prank.” He also described the revival as “hilarious and weird,” saying he had not expected it for a song he made 15 years earlier (Headliner).

What do the reported chart and streaming numbers show?
The published figures are snapshots from different dates and measure different things. Shazam rankings reflect song discovery on that service; TikTok audio uses count videos using an audio; official on-demand streams count listening activity; and chart positions rank tracks under the rules of a particular chart. They should not be combined into a single, current measure of global popularity.
| Measure | Reported result | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|
| Shazam chart | No. 48 on the global chart; No. 5 on the global Dance chart | GAFFA’s report dated Oct. 23, 2025; it also said the track topped Shazam charts in several countries. These are October 2025 standings, not current rankings. GAFFA |
| Canadian Hot 100 | Debuted at No. 74 | Billboard Canada report for the chart dated Dec. 20; a dated chart entry, not a present-day position. Billboard Canada |
| TikTok audio uses | More than 25,000 uses | Count reported by Billboard Canada at the time of its coverage; the article’s figure is time-bound, not a live count. Billboard Canada |
| Official on-demand streams | From around 37,000 weekly U.S. streams to nearly 2.5 million, a gain of 6,516% | Billboard reported that Luminate measured the increase for the week ending Dec. 11, 2025. This is a U.S. weekly streaming comparison, not a lifetime total or global figure. Billboard, Dec. 17, 2025 PDF copy |
| Bubbling Under the Hot 100 | Debuted at No. 19 | U.S. chart position reported by Billboard on Dec. 17, 2025. Billboard, Dec. 17, 2025 PDF copy |
Why the 2009 date is misleading
The reviewed reports consistently date KATO and Nørgaard’s version to 2010. Headliner distinguishes it from DJ Jose’s earlier 2007 release, which helps explain why dates associated with the song’s history can vary. Without evidence of a separate 2009 release, 2010 is the supported year for the version used in the trend.
