In March 2024, Lex Fridman publicly defended his friend Andrew Huberman after New York Magazine published a story about Huberman’s private relationships. Fridman called the article a “hit-piece” and argued that Huberman’s podcast had helped millions of people, including Fridman himself, lead healthier lives. That was Fridman’s assessment—not an independent finding about the reporting or the allegations.
What Lex Fridman said in March 2024
Contemporaneous coverage reported that Fridman described the New York Magazine feature as a “hit-piece” and wrote: “It’s heartbreaking to see a hit-piece written about my friend Andrew Huberman,” and “His podcast has helped millions of people (including me) lead healthier lives.” These remarks are reported quotations from Fridman’s public post; the original post was not available for direct verification in the sources cited here. Yahoo’s March 27, 2024 coverage reported on his defense.
Fridman’s stated case rested on two points: his friendship with Huberman and his favorable view of the podcast’s effect on listeners. Those explain why Fridman spoke up, but they do not establish whether the magazine’s reporting was fair or whether the reported conduct occurred.
What the Huberman story alleged
The controversy followed a New York Magazine feature about Huberman’s relationships. The Guardian’s account of that reporting described allegations from former partners and other sources. It said the story included a pseudonymously identified partner, “Sarah,” and reported that Huberman had relationships with at least five other women during that relationship, some lasting years. These are allegations described in reporting, not adjudicated findings. The Guardian’s article, amended March 29, 2024, summarizes the claims and asks how they relate to the podcast’s audience.

Yahoo’s contemporaneous summary said the magazine drew on interviews with colleagues, friends, and former partners. It also said Huberman denied some allegations through a representative and otherwise characterized the matter as private. That account does not provide grounds to treat every allegation as confirmed, or to describe the response more broadly than the reporting supports.
Why his podcast’s value did not settle the allegations
Fridman’s appeal to the podcast’s benefits addressed its perceived value to listeners, not the truth of claims about Huberman’s personal relationships. The two questions are separate: a listener may find a show useful while still assessing allegations about its host on their own evidence. Likewise, criticism of private conduct does not by itself establish whether a particular scientific explanation on the podcast is accurate.

There was also pre-scandal discussion of how the show presents science. A June 2023 TIME profile covered the podcast’s appeal and expert concerns about extrapolating from preliminary research. That broader context is distinct from the relationship allegations and does not resolve them.

In a June 27, 2024 episode of The Lex Fridman Podcast (#435), Fridman and Huberman discussed scientific criticism of an earlier Huberman Lab episode about cannabis and high-THC cannabis. Fridman criticized the manner of an online critic’s response and praised Huberman for inviting the critic to discuss the issue on the podcast. Fridman told Huberman: “You are a positive, humble voice exploring all the interesting aspects of science. You want to learn. If you’ve got anything wrong, you want to learn about it.” Huberman replied: “Let’s chat, and why don’t you tell me where I’m wrong and let’s discuss.”

The official episode transcript is labeled human-generated and warns that it may contain errors; consult the recording to verify exact wording. The official episode page gives the date and framing.

What Fridman’s defense does—and does not—show
- It shows Fridman’s position: he considered the article a hit piece, cited his friendship with Huberman, and praised the podcast’s perceived benefit.
- It does not independently verify the reporting: Fridman’s favorable view is not evidence that confirms or disproves the allegations.
- The claims remain attributed: the relationship accounts described here are allegations reported by New York Magazine and summarized by The Guardian, alongside the limited response reported by Yahoo.
- The later cannabis discussion is separate: it concerns how scientific criticism was handled, not whether the personal allegations were true.
