The “Fast & Furious for the skies” comparison fits its director and appetite for big action, but the film’s airborne premise does more work than its character writing: the spectacle is fun, even when the people and plans feel thin.
What is Lift about?
Professional thief Cyrus Whitaker (Kevin Hart) leads an international crew on a mission to steal $500 million in gold from a vault aboard a plane. The job is tied to an effort to prevent a terrorist attack by robbing the rich. The film first introduces the crew through an art-auction robbery in Venice, then shifts its focus to the high-altitude caper. The $500 million is a fictional plot detail, not a real-world figure.
Interpol agent Abby Gladwell (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who has a history with Cyrus, is part of the operation’s uneasy alliance. The setup gives the film two familiar heist pleasures—watching a team assemble a plan and seeing that plan go wrong—while making the aircraft more than a backdrop. At 40,000 feet, the crew has limited room to maneuver and little opportunity to pause the job.
Does the airborne heist work?
The plane gives the caper a clear hook
The premise is Lift’s strongest selling point. A robbery on a commercial flight creates a natural pressure cooker: the crew must work around the aircraft, its passengers and the logistics of keeping the operation concealed. The film uses that contained setting to give its heist a distinct shape, rather than treating the plane as just another location on a globe-trotting checklist.

Spectacle outruns plausibility
Director F. Gary Gray knows how to stage large-scale action, and the movie keeps reaching for the next complication. That momentum can be entertaining, but the increasingly elaborate mechanics ask the viewer to accept a lot on faith. When a sequence depends on the plan behaving exactly as the plot needs, tension gives way to spectacle. The result is more breezy than intricate: it is easier to enjoy the motion than to scrutinize the logic.
How do the comedy and cast fare?
Netflix labels Lift an action comedy and positions it as a fast-paced heist. The comic tone keeps the film light, but the balance is uneven: jokes and action beats do not always reinforce each other, and Cyrus’s assured mastermind persona can sit awkwardly beside Hart’s familiar comedic presence. Viewers who want a hard-edged crime thriller may find the mood too playful; viewers looking for a lightweight caper may find the shift in tone part of its appeal.

Mbatha-Raw gives Abby a capable presence, and Vincent D’Onofrio brings a welcome eccentricity as Denton. The ensemble also includes Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno and Sam Worthington. The crew supplies the expected range of skills and personalities, though not every member gets enough room to become more than a useful piece of the operation.
Adrian Horton’s Guardian review, published January 11, 2024, found Hart unconvincing as an art thief while acknowledging Gray’s experience with action films. That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a consensus. It does, however, point to a real question for viewers: whether Hart’s comic energy makes Cyrus more entertaining or makes the role’s authority harder to buy.

Is Lift like Fast & Furious?
The comparison is a useful shorthand for the film’s appetite for escalation and its director’s action credentials, not a claim that Lift belongs to the franchise. Gray directed The Fate of the Furious, and Lift similarly favors a team operation, elaborate set pieces and increasingly outsized action. Its central airplane robbery also gives the spectacle a simple, memorable hook.
But the resemblance has limits. The film’s appeal rests more on the novelty of its setting and the mechanics of one big heist than on a deeply developed ensemble or a sustained emotional engine. It reaches for franchise-scale spectacle without always earning the same sense of momentum. Think of the phrase as a promise about scale and action, not a guarantee of equal chemistry, coherence or quality.

Who stars in Lift, and who made it?
F. Gary Gray directed the film. Netflix’s credits include his earlier work on Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job, The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton. Kevin Hart stars as Cyrus Whitaker, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Abby Gladwell, and Vincent D’Onofrio plays Denton. The wider cast features Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno and Sam Worthington.
Is Lift worth watching?
Watch it if you want a fast, undemanding heist movie whose airplane setting gives the action a clear identity. It is a reasonable pick for a casual movie night when you value big set pieces and a light tone more than airtight plotting or layered character work. Skip it if you need a clever, grounded heist or a sharply defined crew; Lift is more successful as a high-concept ride than as a precision-engineered caper.
