There is no established yes-or-no finding. In late 2021, Ariana Grande faced online accusations of “Asian-fishing” over photos associated with photographer Katia Temkin. Coverage documented disagreement about the images’ styling and appearance, but it did not establish Grande’s intent or a consensus on whether the label applied.
What does “Asian-fishing” mean?
The term is contested rather than a formal diagnosis. A 2021 Daily Illini opinion article used it for non-Asian people using makeup, photo editing, or clothing to appear East Asian. The Independent, attributing a definition to Canadian journalist Wanna Thompson, described it more broadly as appropriating another racial background for personal gain. Those framings overlap, but they are not identical, and commentators may apply the label differently.

What prompted the accusations against Ariana Grande?
Reports focused on photos associated with photographer Katia Temkin that circulated in late 2021. The Independent reported on December 7 that critics discussed the images’ eye makeup, poses, lighting, and perceived resemblance to K-pop imagery; the report said the photos had allegedly been deleted from Instagram. The Daily Illini also discussed the images as now-deleted and considered how angles, lighting, and makeup could shape viewers’ interpretations. These are reports about the controversy and viewers’ readings of the images, not proof of why they were styled that way.
UOL Splash reported renewed accusations and divided reactions on December 24, 2021. Its account also mentioned a separate 2019 controversy involving Grande’s Japanese-language tattoo. That earlier episode is distinct from the photo dispute and does not establish intent in it.

Why did people disagree about the label?
The disagreement turns on more than what a photograph looks like. Viewers may interpret styling choices as evoking East Asian features or aesthetics, while others may understand the same choices as makeup, lighting, or photographic presentation without a racial meaning. Their judgments also depend on which definition of “Asian-fishing” they use.
Academic discussion places the episode within wider online debates about cultural appropriation and celebrity racial presentation. An Oxford Academic chapter records a deidentified online comment asking, “Isn’t she Asian-fishing now?” That example shows the accusation appeared in the discourse; it is not a poll, a measure of how common the view was, or a verdict on the images.
Rank #2
- Positions is the sixth studio album by Ariana Grande, released in 2020 on Republic Records
What can—and can’t—be concluded?
- Established: Late-2021 coverage documented accusations about photos associated with Grande and disagreement over their presentation.
- Not established: The reviewed accounts do not provide a direct statement from Grande about this specific accusation or evidence that proves her intent.
- Not established: Social-media responses reported in news coverage do not show what Asian people generally thought, or demonstrate a community-wide consensus.
- Separate issue: The 2019 tattoo controversy is not evidence that resolves the 2021 photos dispute.
The most precise answer, then, is that Grande was accused of Asian-fishing over the 2021 images, but the available coverage establishes the accusation and debate—not a definitive classification or her intent.
