Yes. It is OK to play Pokémon as an adult. You do not need to justify a hobby because of your age: if it is enjoyable and fits your time, budget and responsibilities, that is a good enough reason to play.
Adults do play Pokémon
Research has directly examined adult Pokémon players. A 2019 qualitative study analyzed memorable experiences shared by 349 Pokémon GO players aged 40–65. The researchers explored themes including gameplay, social connections, location, personal circumstances, negative events and players’ feelings. It shows that middle-aged adults played and reflected on the game; it is not an estimate of how many adults play Pokémon overall. Read the DiGRA study.
A 2026 scoping review of Pokémon GO studies describes varied player backgrounds and motivations. In some of the studies it reviewed, players mentioned nostalgia, alongside enjoyment, curiosity, social connection, exploration and progression. These findings are about Pokémon GO research, not a universal account of every adult Pokémon fan. Read the review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.
Why adults might enjoy it—and why experiences differ
People can enjoy Pokémon for different reasons: the games, the world and characters, a sense of nostalgia, time with other people, collecting, or the satisfaction of playing. The Pokémon GO review identifies several motivations, but no one reason applies to every player. Studies focused on Pokémon GO also cannot tell us exactly why someone enjoys the main-series games, the anime or the trading-card game.

Social attitudes vary, too. A 2019 survey of 1,059 adults in Costa Rica examined perceptions of videogames and Pokémon GO use; it found both positive and negative views, with attitudes varying by age and education. Because the study was geographically specific, it does not establish how adults everywhere view Pokémon—or whether adult fans face a universal stigma. See the study indexed by PubMed.
Choose the way of playing that fits your life
“Pokémon” covers different activities, and the studies do not identify one format as best for adults. Consider what you want from the hobby before deciding how to play.

- This also comes with 65 card sleeves, 40 Pokémon TCG Energy cards, and a player’s guide to the Mega Evolution—Pitch Black expansion.
- You will also get a competition-legal coin-flip die, 6 damage-counter dice, and a plastic coin.
- You will also find a collector’s box to hold everything, with 6 dividers to keep it organized and a code card for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.
- For a screen-based, mostly solo activity: A Pokémon video game may suit you better than a game built around visiting places or meeting other players.
- For walking and exploring: Pokémon GO uses location-based play. Stay aware of your surroundings and consider what location information you share; the 2026 review notes safety and privacy concerns linked to these mechanics.
- For a social or collecting hobby: Pokémon TCG cards offer a route into card play and collecting. A 2025 study surveyed people in the Pokémon TCG community, but it did not evaluate particular cards, sets or prices. Buying cards is not necessary to enjoy Pokémon.
As with any hobby, think about whether its time commitment and any spending work for you. You do not have to turn a pastime into a purchase, a competition or a productivity goal to make it worthwhile.
What mental-health research about the TCG does—and does not—show
A 2025 peer-reviewed article examined self-stigma in the Pokémon Trading Card Game community, using an online survey of 733 players. The survey data were collected in September 2021. The authors note that the study relied on self-reported depression rather than a standardized questionnaire, and that further research would be needed to determine whether rumination and depression predated participation or resulted from it. It does not prove that playing Pokémon causes mental-health problems. Read the article record from the University of Groningen.

A simple personal test
Ask whether you enjoy playing and whether it fits your actual life. If it does, your age is not a reason to stop. If it no longer feels enjoyable or is crowding out priorities you care about, you can change how often or how you play. That is a personal choice, not a test of whether the hobby is age-appropriate.
