Its rating explanation cites “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.” New Zealand’s Classification Office separately says the film is unsuitable for viewers under 16 in New Zealand. These are different jurisdictions and classification systems, not a single global age cutoff.

The New Zealand Classification Office’s advisory, dated 17 July 2024, says: “This Marvel film is for older audiences and is not suitable for rangatahi or tamariki under 16 years old.” Read the New Zealand content warning, Common Sense Media’s parents’ guide, and the BBFC UK listing in their respective contexts.

How violent and gory is the film?
Graphic violence is the clearest reason to keep the film away from younger viewers. The New Zealand Classification Office describes violence as frequent and often exaggerated for comedy, while warning that some moments include substantial blood and gore. Examples include a head exploding, repeated stabbing, skin being ripped away, and a hand being put inside characters’ heads. Common Sense Media also notes graphic decapitations, dismemberment, combat, and characters reduced to blood and viscera.
The comic tone may make the action feel less realistic for some viewers, but it does not remove the imagery. The New Zealand office reports that its youth panel found bone and gore more affecting than blood, and identified the hand-inside-the-head sequence as the most unsettling.

How much strong language is there?
Expect frequent, strong profanity, much of it used for comic effect. The New Zealand Classification Office describes coarse language as frequent. Common Sense Media characterizes strong language as constant and says a particularly strong profanity is used in nearly every scene.
Does it show sex or nudity?
The sexual content is mainly verbal: jokes and references rather than depicted sex scenes. The New Zealand advisory says there are no sex scenes, but notes sexual-act references and a one-off joke referencing child sexual abuse that some viewers may find shocking or offensive. Common Sense Media reports no nudity and mentions jokes involving erections, pegging, masturbation, and arousal.

Are alcohol or drugs shown?
Yes. Common Sense Media says Wolverine, also known as Logan, is alcohol dependent, drinks frequently, and drinks rubbing alcohol. The guide also notes cocaine references and adult drinking.

Common Sense Media identifies friendship, teamwork, found family, responsibility, redemption, and courage among the film’s positive themes. Those themes sit alongside its graphic violence, strong language, and raunchy humor; they do not change the film’s mature content profile.
