Drake Hogestyn’s final appearance as John Black on Days of Our Lives aired September 9, 2024. John spends the episode reassuring his grandson Tate about standing by his father, Brady, and ends it by embracing Brady after the charges against him are dropped. John’s last scenes with his wife, Marlena, aired four days earlier, on September 5.
What happens in Drake Hogestyn’s final episode?
In the September 9, 2024 episode, Tate confides in John about a painful family situation. Tate told Holly that Eric was the hit-and-run driver who killed her father, Daniel, and is upset by Holly’s reaction. He is also wrestling with his decision to remain loyal to his father, Brady, who had been arrested in connection with Sarah’s hit-and-run.
John tells Tate not to feel guilty for standing by Brady. He makes clear that his love for his son would not end because of anything Brady might do, and encourages Tate to reach out to Holly. Tate texts her. Then Brady arrives with news that the charges against him have been dropped for lack of evidence. John reaches out and hugs him, closing the episode’s family thread with a moment of support.
When did John’s final scenes with Marlena air?
John and Marlena’s final scenes aired in the September 5, 2024 episode, not in Hogestyn’s final appearance on September 9. As John calls family members about Brady’s situation, Marlena reassures him that they will face the difficult time together. They embrace, and John leaves to visit Brady.

That date is the publication’s reported filming date; it should not be taken to establish that the scene broadcast last was necessarily the final scene Hogestyn filmed.
Hogestyn’s long run as John Black
