Seth Brooks Binzer, the Crazy Town frontman known as Shifty Shellshock, died on June 24, 2024, aged 49. The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner later determined that the cause was the effects of fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine, and classified his death as an accident.
Who was Shifty Shellshock?
Binzer was the lead singer of Crazy Town, the Los Angeles rap-rock band best known for its 2000 hit “Butterfly.” The song appeared on the group’s debut album, The Gift of Game, released in November 1999. ABC News reported that “Butterfly” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Crazy Town went on hiatus in 2003 after its second album did not match the success of its debut, ABC News reported. The band reunited in 2007. Binzer also released a solo album, Happy Love Sick, in 2004, and appeared on Celebrity Rehab and Sober House. ABC News described him as having spoken publicly about struggles with addiction.

When and where did he die?
According to the Medical Examiner, Binzer was found unresponsive at a residence on June 24, 2024. His death was pronounced at 12:13 p.m. The county said the examination was completed on June 25, 2024, and the cause and manner were certified on September 24. Its announcement identified the case as 2024-10084.
Why early reports said the cause was unknown
ABC News reported Binzer’s death on June 25, 2024, when officials had not yet disclosed a cause. That account reflected what was known at the time; the county’s later September determination established the cause and manner of death. The county announcement said the full Medical Examiner report was expected on October 11, 2024.

Crazy Town’s musical legacy
Crazy Town’s breakthrough remains closely tied to “Butterfly,” the third single from The Gift of Game, released in October 2000. The song’s rise to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 brought the band its defining mainstream success. The album’s title and its best-known single are also the clearest starting points for listeners exploring Binzer’s work with the group.
