Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of IT: Welcome to Derry. The finale confirms the fan theory: Marge Truman will grow up to be Margaret Tozier, Richie Tozier’s mother. Pennywise knows that Richie and the Losers will eventually defeat it, so it targets Marge in an attempt to prevent that future. The episode does not show that Pennywise succeeds in changing it.
What does the Marge and Richie twist reveal?
Pennywise singles out Marge and calls her by the surname Tozier. It tells her that her future son, Richie, and his friends will be responsible for its defeat, then threatens to kill her. The implication is straightforward: if Marge never has Richie, Pennywise may avoid the future it has seen. The finale confirms Marge’s future family connection, but leaves the success of Pennywise’s threat unresolved. TV Insider and TheWrap both discuss the reveal.
Why Rich matters to Marge
Rich dies before the finale, and the revelation gives Marge’s bond with him added emotional weight. It invites viewers to connect Rich’s name and place in Marge’s life with the future Richie Tozier. The family reveal is confirmed; the precise reason Richie receives his name is not established by the cited coverage, so it is best understood as an implication rather than a stated explanation. How can Pennywise know the future?
The show presents Pennywise as experiencing time outside the ordinary linear sequence. That is the story’s explanation for how the creature can know about its eventual defeat while confronting Marge in the past. It is an adaptation choice, not a real-world claim about time or a definitive rule for every version of IT.

Andy Muschietti told TheWrap that Stephen King’s novel raises questions about how IT experiences time without offering a single definitive answer: “There’s something very mysterious in the book, there’s one moment of the Losers speculating about the way that It experiences time, but there’s not a single answer in the book.”
Barbara Muschietti described nonlinear time as an early creative choice, one that helps avoid the usual prequel problem of audiences already knowing how events end. In a TV Guide interview, she said: “It’s unavoidable for Andy to tackle a story without that component. He is obsessed with time. Our dad is obsessed with time and the plasticity of it.”

What happens in the finale’s coda?
The group’s climax ends with Pennywise trapped in Derry again. The coda then jumps forward to 1988: Ingrid Kersh remains at Juniper Hill, where Beverly Marsh—played by Sophia Lillis—appears. That scene links the series to the films’ Mrs. Kersh material. TV Guide reported that the scene was added during pickup photography after principal production had wrapped. TV Guide
Another character connection comes when Dick Hallorann says he is heading to a hotel to become a chef, a line that viewers familiar with The Shining and Doctor Sleep may recognize. It functions as a story connection, not an adaptation of those works. TV Insider

Does the finale confirm future seasons?
No. The creators have described a three-season blueprint that moves backward through Derry’s catastrophic history: the 1962 Black Spot, the 1935 Bradley Gang massacre, and the 1908 Easter egg hunt. They also said the series’ historical periods differ from the dates in the novel’s interludes. This is a creative plan, not confirmation that the additional seasons have been renewed or produced. TVLine
The backward chronology gains a particular tension from Pennywise’s apparent awareness of the future: although the series moves toward earlier events, the creature may already know how its story ends. That is the significance of the finale’s time reveal—not proof that it can successfully rewrite the timeline.
