That figure describes the project’s development span—not six years of uninterrupted, full-scale episode production. The available accounts do not break the span down into exact phases.
What does “six years” mean?
The six-year figure is the co-creators’ description of season one’s overall development, reported in a November 2021 interview with Christian Linke and Alex Yee. It is the clearest sourced answer to how long Arcane took to make, but it is not an itemized production schedule. The cited accounts do not establish precise start and end months or say how much of the span was spent on writing, animation, pauses, or other phases. Why was the production a major undertaking?
Arcane was developed and produced by Riot Games in partnership with animation studio Fortiche Productions. About Netflix’s description of the partnership The transition from Riot and Fortiche’s shorter video work to a series was a substantial change in scale. In a 2021 interview, showrunner Christian Linke described the challenge as moving from making “two or three minutes” to making “six hours,” and discussed rebuilding workflows and learning tools suited to a larger production. That context helps explain the scale of the undertaking, but it does not assign a duration to any particular production phase. The Washington Post’s 2021 interview with Linke
How did the release delay affect the timeline?
In 2020, Riot announced that COVID-19 had delayed the worldwide release of its first animated series to 2021, citing difficulties for creative development and production while coworkers could not meet in person. Riot’s 2020 update on Arcane The show premiered in November 2021, according to Riot’s later announcement. Riot’s March 2022 announcement The delay establishes that the schedule changed; the cited statements do not quantify how much it added to the six-year development span.

How does season two compare?
Netflix’s 2024 behind-the-scenes account says the first drawing for season two was made just after season one debuted in November 2021, and describes a three-year creative effort to bring season two’s vision to life. Netflix Tudum’s season-two feature This is a separate description of season two’s creative effort, not a like-for-like production ledger that can be used to recalculate season one’s timeline.
