The colored sweat in Gatorade’s ads is a visual effect, not literal sweat produced by drinking the drink. For the 2024 “Is It In You?” campaign revival, designer Leon Imas describes the visual details the team worked on to make the drops feel convincing—but the available production accounts do not reveal whether the final effect used colored liquid on set, digital compositing, CGI, or a combination.
Which Gatorade commercial are you asking about?
“Colored sweat” is a recurring image associated with Gatorade’s “Is It In You?” campaign, including its 1990s and early-2000s advertising. PepsiCo said the tagline and image returned in a 2024 campaign, with a spot narrated by Michael Jordan and social filters that let people recreate the look. PepsiCo’s 2024 announcement identifies the revival, but does not describe how the sweat effect was produced.
The date matters: a 2015 “We Love Sweat” commercial is another possible referent. Sports Illustrated’s report on that spot notes Jordan’s narration and describes colored sweat as a recurring Gatorade visual convention. A production technique established for one commercial should not be assumed to apply to another.
What the 2024 designer says about the effect
Designer Leon Imas, who says he worked on the campaign revival, describes the challenge as making an unreal image of sweat look realistic. He wrote: “How do we create a look of sweat that feels realistic – for something that is not real?” His account focuses on the appearance of individual droplets and how they work together: their shapes and sizes, clusters, contours against a face, movement, and the way light interacts with each drop. Imas’s campaign post documents those visual considerations, not the specific production pipeline.

Those details explain why the effect needs careful design: convincing sweat is more than a colored mark on skin. The droplets have to read as liquid as they move and catch light. But the designer’s description does not establish whether the 2024 spot achieved that look practically, digitally, or through a mixture of methods.
What is—and is not—known about how it was made
The public accounts cited here do not confirm whether the colored sweat in the 2024 commercial was made with colored liquid on set, created in CGI, added through compositing, or produced using multiple techniques. That specific answer should remain open unless a production source for the exact spot documents it.

A past Gatorade commercial shows why it is risky to generalize from one execution. For a separate Gatorade Ice ad, Animation World Network reported that A52 created icy sweat primarily in Inferno, using CGI ice particles tracked onto Mia Hamm’s face. That is documented as a digital effect for an icy-sweat spot—not evidence of how the colored sweat in the 2024 campaign was made. Animation World Network’s account of the Gatorade Ice commercial describes that distinct production.

A 2003 AnandTech forum thread uses the same question as this article’s title. Participants proposed possibilities such as filming in black and white and selectively restoring color, using colored liquid, or adding the effect with CGI. The thread does not provide production documentation, so those suggestions are speculation rather than verified explanations. The AnandTech discussion is useful for understanding the question’s history, not for identifying the method used in a particular ad.
