Emmy Rossum said she was closest off camera to “Lip”—Jeremy Allen White’s character on Shameless. Her comments describe a close, sibling-like working relationship and genuine admiration for White as a scene partner. They do not establish whether the two remain close friends privately today.
What did Emmy Rossum say about her closeness to Jeremy Allen White?
Asked in a Call Her Daddy interview which Gallagher sibling she was closest to off camera, Rossum answered: “Lip.” White played Lip Gallagher, Fiona’s brother on Shameless.
Rossum said she especially enjoyed scenes in which the two actors could explore their characters together, whether the moments were quiet or confrontational. She praised White’s intensity and honesty as a scene partner, said she was proud of him, and described herself as lucky to have shared those scenes with him.
How did their time on Shameless shape that bond?
A long-running sibling collaboration
Rossum described the scale of their working relationship in the interview: “five days a week, five months a year for nine years together.” The line refers to time spent working on the series, not a claim that they were siblings in real life.

In July 2026, Rossum told Us Weekly that she and White had spent “10 years as brother and sister” on the show. She praised him and said she would be lucky to work with him again. The phrase describes their on-screen roles as Fiona and Lip; it does not imply a real-life family or romantic relationship.
A close ensemble beyond the set
Rossum also recalled the Shameless cast spending time together away from work. During production in Chicago, she said, cast members stayed at the same hotel, visited one another’s rooms, ate together, and played in the snow during a shutdown day.

In a 2011 Philadelphia Inquirer interview, Rossum said castmates spent time together off set and described her home as a gathering place where they barbecued, swam, ate, and sometimes slept over. Those recollections support a picture of a socially close cast, but do not mean every actor had the same private relationship with every other cast member. A 2014 TV Guide cast interview offers additional context on the ensemble’s on-screen family dynamic and comfort on set.

The public remarks establish that Rossum felt close to White as a co-star, valued their shared scenes, and spoke warmly about him years later. They do not confirm the present state of their private friendship. Her willingness to work with him again shows professional admiration, but is not proof that they currently spend time together or remain close friends outside work.
