Wanda Sykes identifies Alex Sykes as her wife. The couple reportedly met in 2006, married privately in Las Vegas on October 25, 2008, and welcomed twins in April 2009. Wanda came out publicly weeks after the wedding at a Las Vegas rally opposing California’s Proposition 8.
How Wanda and Alex Sykes met
Wanda and Alex reportedly met in 2006 while taking a ferry to New York’s Fire Island. A 2023 Yahoo timeline attributes the ferry detail to Wanda’s 2018 interview with The Guardian; a PEOPLE interview republished by Yahoo in September 2026 also gives 2006 as the year they met. Yahoo’s timeline and the 2026 PEOPLE report republished by Yahoo provide the published accounts.
When did Wanda and Alex get married?
The best-supported date is October 25, 2008. Multiple reports describe a private ceremony in Las Vegas. There is a conflicting year in Wanda’s 2019 WIRED Autocomplete Interview transcript: when asked when she married, she answered “October 2009.” The 2008 date is repeated by the Yahoo timeline and the September 2026 PEOPLE report republished by Yahoo. WIRED’s interview transcript records the discrepancy.
Wanda’s public coming out in 2008
Several weeks after the wedding, in November 2008, Wanda came out publicly during an impromptu speech at a Las Vegas equality rally. The rally took place amid opposition to California Proposition 8. Her announcement followed a private marriage and made her relationship with Alex part of her public life.

Wanda later described the relief of no longer having to conceal that part of herself while performing. In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, she said: “You don’t want to be on stage trying to be funny and having that other little piece of your brain being occupied by: ‘Are they gonna find out? What if I slip up?’ Now I’m just 100% there.” Read the Guardian interview.
Twins Olivia and Lucas were born in April 2009
Reports say Alex gave birth to the couple’s twins in April 2009. AARP identifies their daughter as Olivia Lou. Sources disagree about Lucas’s middle name: AARP lists Claude, while Yahoo’s 2023 timeline lists Clyde. Because the accounts conflict, Lucas’s middle name is best left unspecified. AARP’s Wanda Sykes profile and Yahoo’s timeline give the differing versions.

What is publicly known about their relationship now?
In September 2026, PEOPLE published an interview republished by Yahoo in which Wanda discussed her marriage ahead of the couple’s 18th anniversary. The report also says they attended the US Open on September 10, 2026. These are recent public indications of their relationship, not a basis for assumptions about their private life. Wanda’s own concise description came in her 2019 WIRED interview: “My wife is Alex Sykes.”

The Los Angeles Times reported that Wanda’s parents did not attend her 2008 wedding and described a difficult period around her coming out to her family. That reporting establishes family strain at the time, but it does not justify broader claims about their private relationships. The Los Angeles Times account covers that context.
