In Marvel comics, she had hex abilities from birth and later learned to work with chaos magic. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), she gained her powers while fighting alongside HYDRA after surviving a bombing in Sokovia. The Mind Stone becomes important later, but Marvel’s account does not say it alone gave her those original abilities.
How Wanda’s powers differ between comics and the MCU
| Continuity | How her powers emerge | How she develops them | What they become |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel comics | Wanda’s hex abilities are described as innate and present from birth. | She develops her abilities over time; Agatha Harkness later teaches her mysticism. | Wanda becomes a chaos-magic user whose power can alter reality. |
| MCU | She gains her powers while fighting alongside HYDRA after the Sokovian explosion. | In WandaVision, she confronts her abilities and learns about witchcraft and runes with Agatha’s guidance. | Her immense power and identity as the Scarlet Witch come into focus. |
These are separate continuities, not stages in one shared biography. Marvel’s comics history of Wanda and its MCU recap describe different origins.

In the comics, was Wanda born with her powers?
Yes. Marvel’s account of the twins’ history says Wanda possessed hex abilities from birth. As a child, she was mistaken for a witch by superstitious townspeople; Magneto rescued her and her twin brother, Pietro. The twins later appeared in the Brotherhood of Mutants, associated with Magneto.
Wanda debuted in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #4, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Her family history has been revised in later stories, so early assumptions about her parentage should not be treated as a settled, unchanging origin. The key point for her powers is that the comics describe her hex abilities as innate, rather than as something the Mind Stone or HYDRA gave her.

How her abilities grow in comics
Her childhood hex abilities are not the whole story. Wanda develops into a user of chaos magic, with the ability to alter reality. During her Avengers years, her reality-changing abilities grow further. Agatha Harkness later teaches Wanda mysticism, helping her understand and work with chaos magic and hexes. Marvel’s comics primer, Quicksilver history, Agatha Harkness character guide and guide to Marvel mystics cover these parts of her comics history.
In the MCU, how did Wanda gain her powers?
In the MCU account given by Marvel, Wanda and Pietro survive an explosion in their Sokovian apartment building that kills their parents. The explosion is caused by a Stark missile. Later, the twins fight alongside HYDRA, and Wanda gains her powers during that period. Marvel’s recap does not specify a complete scientific mechanism, so it is more precise to say her powers emerged during her time with HYDRA than to claim a more detailed cause.
Rank #2
Did the Mind Stone give Wanda her powers?
Marvel’s cited recap does not say the Mind Stone alone created Wanda’s original abilities. The Stone matters later: Wanda destroys it in an attempt to keep it from Thanos while using her powers to hold off Thanos’s forces. That later connection should not be confused with the account of how she first gained her powers.
What does WandaVision reveal about her abilities?
WandaVision shifts the focus from the moment Wanda’s powers emerge to her understanding of them. Marvel describes her as immensely powerful but not taught how to wield that power. Agatha becomes both an instructor and a rival: their confrontation helps Wanda recognize and accept her identity as the Scarlet Witch, as well as understand her use of runes.

Marvel’s account of the series connects that arc to acceptance and self-understanding. It quotes head writer Jac Schaeffer describing Wanda’s character arc as “about acceptance and stepping into your power and having a full understanding of yourself and no longer being in denial.” Read Marvel’s article on Wanda’s runes for its discussion of the story and Schaeffer’s comments.

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #4 is Wanda’s first appearance, according to Marvel. It is a natural starting point for seeing her early place in the comics, though it predates the later developments in her family history, magic and identity as the Scarlet Witch.
