His House is a 2020 horror film about a young South Sudanese couple seeking asylum and a new life in England while a sinister presence haunts their home. Written and directed by Remi Weekes, it blends a haunted-house premise with the couple’s experience of flight and displacement.
What is His House about?
Netflix’s official synopsis describes a young couple from war-torn South Sudan who seek asylum and a fresh start in England, only to be tormented by a sinister force in their new home. The premise sets up both a supernatural threat and the pressures of trying to build a life after leaving home. This spoiler-light description does not reveal how the haunting develops.
The film follows fictional characters; it is not a documentary or a comprehensive account of asylum policy. Its haunted-house story provides the framework for exploring displacement and adjustment.
Who made the film, and who stars in it?
- Writer and director: Remi Weekes.
- Story: Felicity Evans and Toby Venables.
- Cast: Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù, Wunmi Mosaku, and Matt Smith, as listed by Netflix.
What kind of horror film is it?
Netflix classifies His House as both horror and an independent movie. Its central device is a supernatural presence in a home, while its setup also places the couple’s asylum journey and adjustment to life in England at the center of the story. The result is a haunted-home film with a social-drama dimension, rather than a documentary about refugees or the asylum system.
