Netflix decided not to release The Mothership, Halle Berry’s science-fiction film with MRC Film. The movie was filmed in 2021, but its post-production was not completed. Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria later said the decision was mutual with the film’s talent and producers; Netflix has not publicly detailed the specific production problems.
What was The Mothership about?
Netflix announced the project with MRC Film in February 2021, naming Halle Berry as its star and Matt Charman as writer and director. Netflix described it as a science-fiction adventure. Its official announcement follows Sara Morse, whose husband disappears from their rural farm. After Sara discovers an extraterrestrial object beneath their home, she and her children try to uncover the truth.

Why did Netflix shelve the film?
Netflix did not complete and release the film after production problems and a lengthy post-production process. TheWrap reported on January 24, 2024, that the project could not be finished; filming had wrapped in 2021, but post-production remained incomplete. The film had also appeared in Netflix’s preview of new releases for 2022.
On February 1, 2024, TheWrap reported Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria’s account of the decision. She said Netflix met with the production team and talent, including Berry, and that the parties agreed not to release the movie. “Everyone felt it was the right thing not to release it and to do something else together eventually,” Bajaria said. She also described the project as having “lots of production issues.”

Were reshoots or the child actors’ ages the reason?
Reports about significant reshoots and the child actors having aged during the delay circulated as rumors. They were not confirmed in Bajaria’s public explanation, which referred only generally to production issues. The specific problems that prevented completion have not been established publicly.

The sources reviewed establish that Netflix declined to release the film, but they do not establish whether it was later sold to another distributor or made available elsewhere. That leaves its current release status unresolved; it would be inaccurate to say, on this evidence, that it is permanently unavailable.
