Halle Berry’s black-and-white striped Jacquemus gown at the Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony on May 13, 2025, hid extra volume at the back: fashion coverage describes a concealed tulle layer, with Creative Bloq identifying the fabric as pink. It was not a separate pink dress. Berry chose the gown after deciding that a planned Gaurav Gupta gown’s train was too large under Cannes’s updated dress code.
Which Cannes dress had the hidden detail?
Berry wore the Jacquemus trapeze gown at the festival’s May 13 opening ceremony. Its front featured vertical black-and-white stripes, while the added material at the back gave the silhouette more volume. Marie Claire describes a hidden tulle layer; Creative Bloq specifies pink fabric and characterizes it as a colorful structural element. The construction detail comes from fashion coverage, rather than a statement from the designer.
Berry attended the festival as a member of the 2025 feature-film jury, as listed on the official Cannes profile.
Why did Berry switch from the planned Gaurav Gupta gown?
Berry told Variety, as quoted in Marie Claire’s May 2025 report, “I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train.” She said she wanted to follow the Cannes rules and wore the Jacquemus look instead. In a later Vanity Fair interview, she explained that she had other looks with more opulent trains and had to switch them after learning the new requirements. She and stylist Maryam Malakpour found alternatives and arranged fittings around jury duties and evening events.

How is it different from Berry’s pink Cannes look?
Berry’s pink outfit was a separate look worn the following day, May 14, to the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiere. That Celia Kritharioti ensemble combined a black strapless bodice with a pink gingham skirt; it was not the striped Jacquemus gown from the opening ceremony.

In the Vanity Fair interview published May 23, 2025, Berry described the festival as a first for her as a juror and called the experience “mind-boggling.” She also said, “It’s just been one of the most life-enriching experiences I think I’ve ever had.”
