The full transcript reviewed here does not identify Chris Hemsworth by name: the nearest possible connection is a general joke about superhero actors’ gym routines and steroids, so a Hemsworth-specific roast is not established.
What Gervais said about Huffman
Gervais opened with a joke about the limousine he arrived in: “I came here in a limo tonight and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman.” The punchline referenced Huffman’s college-admissions case, rather than a claim about a license plate literally being made by her. The Independent’s transcript records the line.

For context, ABC News reported that Huffman pleaded guilty after paying $15,000 to have her daughter’s SAT answers corrected and served 11 days in prison. That is the real-world case behind the joke; Gervais’s one-liner is not a full account of the case. ABC News’ coverage provides that context.
Why DiCaprio’s film runtime became a dating joke
Gervais connected Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating history to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, saying: “Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end his date was too old for him.” The gag plays on a public stereotype about the ages of DiCaprio’s partners; it is a comic jab, not a documented claim about a particular relationship at the premiere.

ABC News gives the film’s runtime as 2 hours, 40 minutes, which supplies the setup: the joke imagines a date aging past DiCaprio’s supposed preference during the movie. ABC News explains the reference alongside the line.
Was Chris Hemsworth named in the monologue?
Not in the reviewed full transcript. Gervais made a general joke about superhero actors’ gym routines and steroids, but the passage does not name Hemsworth. Because Hemsworth is associated with superhero roles, readers may connect him to that category-level joke; that is an inference, not evidence that Gervais singled him out.

- In a world where people speak the truth and have no concept of deception, a young man about to lose everything invents the lie and goes on to change not just the nature of movie-making, but creates the basis of religion. After much effort, he also gets the girl he loves. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: PG-13 Age: 883929047871 UPC: 883929047871 Manufacturer
The distinction matters: the transcript supports reporting a broad joke about superhero actors, but not a Hemsworth-specific line. The Independent’s transcript is the source for the wording reviewed here.
The monologue’s wider targets
The jokes were not limited to individual stars. Gervais also took aim at Hollywood institutions and award-show speeches, entertainment companies, streaming services including Netflix, Marvel, Martin Scorsese, James Corden and Cats. His broader point was that celebrities and corporations could appear hypocritical when speaking publicly about social issues or industry practices. These were comic provocations, not neutral findings about each target.

In a line about celebrities lecturing the public, ABC News quoted Gervais saying: “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world.” The line captures the combative framing of the monologue, but should be understood as Gervais’s opinion and rhetoric. ABC News’ report discusses the speech’s targets and themes.
When and where the roast happened
Gervais hosted the 77th Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton on January 5, 2020. The Los Angeles Times described it as his fifth time hosting, and reported that he presented this as his final stint in the role. The opening included an explicit disclaimer that the material was jokes. The Los Angeles Times’ coverage places the monologue in the context of his hosting history and its wide-ranging targets.

Contemporary coverage described a mixed atmosphere: jokes drew laughter, while other moments appeared uncomfortable. During the Huffman line, the broadcast camera cut to Tom Hanks; TIME reported that his visible facial reaction became a meme. That describes what viewers saw on camera, not proof of Hanks’s private feelings. CBS News characterized the monologue’s reception as both praised and criticized.
