The headline “General Hospital casts Gregory Harrison as the new Gregory Chase” refers to a 2020 casting, not a new announcement in 2026. Gregory Harrison played Gregory Chase on the ABC soap from 2020 until the character’s death in 2024.
When did Gregory Harrison join General Hospital?
Celebrating The Soaps reported on October 15, 2020, that Harrison had joined General Hospital as Gregory Chase, a role previously played by James Read. Soap Opera Digest later reported that Harrison joined in November 2020 in a recurring capacity. In June 2022, he signed a contract, according to the same outlet.

Who was Gregory Chase?
ABC describes Gregory as a professor and the father of Harrison Chase and Hamilton Finn. The character biography also says Gregory and Jackie Templeton are recently separated. ABC’s character page identifies Gregory Harrison with the role.
Gregory Chase is not the same character as Harrison Chase. Gregory was played by Gregory Harrison; ABC’s current cast listing identifies Harrison Chase as played by Josh Swickard. ABC’s cast page lists Harrison Chase, not Gregory Chase, among its current cast.

What happened to Gregory Chase?
Harrison’s final appearance as Gregory was May 21, 2024, Soap Opera Digest reported. In the story, Gregory died after a battle with ALS. In a 2025 interview, Harrison reflected on playing the character’s decline: “I loved being able to calibrate the slow erosion of Gregory Chase’s abilities because of this disease he had.” The interview discusses his portrayal as an actor; it is not medical guidance.

Soap Opera Digest reported that Harrison received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor for portraying Gregory Chase. In the same interview, he said, “I don’t think of acting as a competitive sport.”
