The January 2024 special George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead was presented as an AI-generated performance by the late comedian, using a synthesized imitation of his voice. But the script’s authorship is a separate question: later reporting said a human wrote it. George Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, objected to the imitation, and his estate sued the project’s creators. A settlement reported in April 2024 required the special’s removal and restricted future use of Carlin’s image, voice, or likeness without written approval from his estate.

What was the George Carlin AI comedy special?

Dudesy released George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead in January 2024. News coverage described it as an hour-long special in which a synthesized imitation of Carlin’s voice delivered comedy about contemporary topics. Carlin died in 2008. The project was promoted as an AI-generated version of the comedian; that description should not be taken to mean that an AI system is known to have written its jokes. Was the George Carlin AI comedy special really made by AI?

It was presented as AI-generated, and it used a synthesized imitation of Carlin’s voice. Those facts do not settle who wrote the script. The special’s voiceover claimed that the system had listened to Carlin’s material and imitated his voice and style. After the lawsuit, reporting described a representative’s statement that a human had written the script. The available reporting therefore distinguishes the project’s AI framing and voice imitation from the reported human authorship of its words; it does not establish that AI wrote the jokes. Why was Kelly Carlin horrified?

Kelly Carlin publicly rejected the imitation of her father. TIME quoted her saying: “My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain and imagination. No machine will ever replace his genius. These AI generated products are clever attempts at trying to recreate a mind that will never exist again.” Her objection focused on the difference between reproducing a voice or style and the human life and imagination behind her father’s work. What did the estate’s lawsuit allege?

George Carlin’s estate sued Dudesy and its hosts, alleging unauthorized use of Carlin’s identity and copyrighted work. These were the plaintiffs’ claims; the cited reporting does not establish them as findings by a court. Associated Press via CBS News, January 26, 2024

What did the reported settlement require?

The Associated Press reported in April 2024 that the defendants agreed to permanently take down the special and refrain from using Carlin’s image, voice, or likeness in the future without the estate’s express written approval. Kelly Carlin said she was grateful the defendants acted responsibly by removing the video. The sources cited here report the settlement in April 2024 but do not establish whether any later court action changed its status. Associated Press, April 2, 2024
