What is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice about?
Officially titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 film brings three generations of the Deetz family back to Winter River after a family tragedy. Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the miniature town in the attic and accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, setting Beetlejuice’s return in motion. Warner Bros.’ official movie site lists the US theatrical release as September 6, 2024, with international release beginning September 4.

What did the first reactions praise?
The first responses came from critics who saw the film at the Venice Film Festival. A contemporaneous SlashFilm roundup highlighted Burton’s unmistakable visual style, the gags and spectacle, practical effects, returning performers and the film’s Afterlife set pieces.

Sophie Monks Kaufman, an IndieWire critic, described the balance of comedy and character this way: “Burton has married his jamboree of gags, visual spectacle, and charming practical effects with a distinctly human tale.” The quote was reproduced in SlashFilm’s roundup.
That praise points to the sequel’s strongest early-reaction axis: Burton-style visual invention and comic effects. Keaton’s performance and the ensemble’s comic energy were also singled out in the positive responses.

What reservations did critics raise?
The reactions were not a consensus. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair said the film “does Lydia Deetz dirty,” according to the SlashFilm roundup. Total Film called it “a fun but scattershot frolic in the afterlife.”
Together, those criticisms point to a second axis for setting expectations: narrative focus and character balance. The film’s inventiveness and gags appealed to some early viewers, while others found the story scattered or objected to how Lydia’s role was handled.

How should you read the “first reactions” headline?
“First reactions” refers to the initial critical responses following Venice screenings in August 2024, ahead of the US theatrical opening. It does not mean every critic agreed, nor does it describe a measured audience poll. The early trend was broadly positive, with clear reservations about story coherence and Lydia’s treatment.
As a later catalog snapshot rather than a measure of those first reactions, Apple TV’s US listing showed a 76% Tomatometer based on 377 reviews: 287 fresh and 90 rotten. Aggregates can change over time; the figure should not be confused with a poll of Venice attendees or a universal verdict.

Warner Bros. lists digital and Blu-ray/DVD ownership options on its official movie site. Streaming availability varies by territory and date. Warner Bros. Discovery announced on November 25, 2024 that the film would begin streaming exclusively on Max on December 6, 2024; Netflix Tudum later reported US streaming availability.
