Oktoberfest 2026 runs September 19 through October 4 at Munich’s Theresienwiese. The grounds and ordinary tent entry are free; plan instead for crowded walk-in seating, a strict bag limit, transit, and the cost of food, rides and beer. This guide reflects official visitor information available October 8, 2026; check the linked pages for changes before you go.
When and where is Oktoberfest 2026?
The festival takes place on the Theresienwiese in Munich from September 19 to October 4, 2026: a 16-day run, according to the official Oktoberfest visitor FAQ. Locals often call the festival “Wiesn,” a short form of the venue’s name. The first Oktoberfest was held on October 17, 1810, as part of celebrations for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese.
Do you need a ticket or tent reservation?
No admission ticket is required for the festival grounds or ordinary tent entry. The organizer lists the historical Oide Wiesn section at €4; check its current details on the official FAQ. A reservation is about securing a table or seats, not gaining admission.
When a reservation helps
Consider booking if your group needs to sit together at a particular time, especially on a busy weekend or evening. Reservations are handled by individual tents, not through a central reservation office, and are often booked by table rather than for one or two people. Some require advance purchase of food and drink vouchers; terms vary by tent.

When walking in may work
Walk-in seats are finite, and a full tent may temporarily stop admitting new visitors. The organizer says large tents keep 25% of seats unreserved on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, 40% remain unreserved until 3 p.m. and 25% after 3 p.m. Those allocations do not guarantee a seat at your chosen tent or time. A weekday lunch visit and flexibility about where you sit improve your options, but cannot ensure availability.
If you need an exchanged booking, use the organizer’s official reservation and resale information; avoid unofficial resale offers.
What time do the tents open?
On opening Saturday, September 19, 2026, the tents open at 9 a.m.; non-alcoholic drinks and small dishes are available from 10 a.m. The mayor taps the first barrel at noon in Schottenhamel. For large tents, the usual schedule is 10 a.m. opening on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends and the October 3 public holiday. They close at 11:30 p.m., with last beer and music at 10:30 p.m. Käfer Wiesn-Schänke and Kuffler’s Weinzelt may stay open later, and small tents have different last-service hours. Consult the organizer’s 2026 tent opening-time schedule for the tent and date you have in mind.

What can you bring onto the grounds?
For 2026, the City of Munich’s Oktoberfest security guidance limits bags to 3 liters or 20 × 15 × 10 cm. Security staff check bags at entrances. Glass bottles are prohibited, as are specified sprays and objects that could be used as cutting, thrusting or stabbing weapons. Check the official security rules shortly before travel in case requirements change. The same guidance describes a Safe Space service for women and girls.

Public transport is the practical choice: Munich’s network includes U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and trams, with increased service during Oktoberfest. Trains, vehicles and stations can still be crowded. Theresienwiese station is especially busy; depending on your route and destination, Goetheplatz, Poccistraße or Schwanthalerhöhe may be useful alternatives. Check the official Oktoberfest transport guide and the MVG or MVV for current routes, service disruptions and tickets.

Beer and other spending
The organizer lists Oktoberfest 2026 beer at €14.80–€15.90 per Maß (one liter). Food, rides and other purchases add to your total; check prices with the chosen tent, stand or attraction rather than assuming they are uniform across the grounds.

Payment and water
The organizer’s FAQ lists a mix of cash-only and card-accepting tents. Contactless payment is available at many stands and attractions, but methods vary, so check with the places you plan to visit and bring a backup payment option. The grounds have 10 free drinking-water fountains, according to the same visitor FAQ.
What should a first-time visitor wear or take home?
Dirndl and lederhosen are traditional but optional; you do not need them to enter. You also cannot keep the glass used to serve your drink: it belongs to the tent operator. If you want a souvenir, mugs are sold at souvenir stands and through the official online shop, as the organizer’s FAQ explains.
