Mike Verdu, the executive who led Netflix’s entry into games, left the company in March 2025. His departure followed a 2024 shift from leading the games division to a role focused on generative AI for games, while Netflix was refining its games priorities. The reporting confirms that he left, but does not establish why; it does not show that the strategy changes caused his departure.
What happened to Mike Verdu at Netflix?
Netflix hired Verdu in July 2021 as vice president of game development to lead its games effort. He later moved out of that division leadership role and into work focused on generative AI for games. On March 11, 2025, Game File reported that he had left Netflix and said a Netflix representative confirmed the departure. Game Developer reported the confirmation the following day.

Game File’s March 11 report and Game Developer’s March 12 coverage establish the departure, but neither gives a reason for it. The available reporting does not characterize the exit as a firing, resignation, or dispute.
How did Verdu’s role change before he left?
In 2024, Verdu shifted from leading Netflix’s games division to a vice president role focused on generative AI for games. Game Developer reported that a leadership reshuffle eventually brought former Epic Games executive Alain Tascan in to lead the division. Verdu announced his AI-focused role in November 2024, according to Game File.

The change establishes that Verdu’s remit evolved before his departure. It does not, on its own, establish that the move was a demotion or that it reflected a particular product decision.
What was changing in Netflix Games?
Netflix was describing a more defined set of games priorities by early 2025, while also saying it would continue to refine its approach. Its March 5 company conference presentation framed games as part of the Netflix membership and highlighted narrative storytelling and TV party games. Those were stated priorities at that date, not a complete account of every project or a stated explanation for Verdu’s exit. Netflix’s March 5, 2025 presentation sets out that positioning.

The strategy was not presented as a clean break from games tied to Netflix shows. On its January 21, 2025 earnings call, the company cited Squid Game: Unleashed as an example of a show and a simultaneous game offering, while saying it would keep refining its strategy. That account appears in the Netflix FQ4 2024 earnings-call transcript. Netflix had also described its plans for games in a December 2023 update, “What’s Next for Netflix Games.”
- Membership: Netflix described games as available within its membership.
- Game formats: Its March 2025 presentation named narrative games and TV party games as areas of focus.
- Connections to shows: In January 2025, the company pointed to Squid Game: Unleashed as a simultaneous game offering connected to a show.
Why did Mike Verdu leave Netflix?
The reason is not established by the reporting available here. Netflix’s strategy statements and Verdu’s 2024 role change provide context for the timing, but neither Game File nor Game Developer reports that those developments caused his departure. A causal explanation would go beyond what the sources confirm.
