David “Kochie” Koch’s surprise Sunrise appearance on 22 December 2023 was a guest visit, not a return to hosting. He spoke about personal finance and encouraged viewers to shop around for health insurance premiums.
Why did David Koch return to Sunrise?
Koch appeared at the Sunrise desk as a guest to discuss his personal-finance work and the importance of comparing health insurance premiums. The 7NEWS report did not name an insurer or recommend a particular policy, so the appearance should not be read as an endorsement of a provider. 7NEWS reported on the appearance on 22 December 2023.
During the visit, Koch reflected on life after the early starts, saying: “I’m feeling normal, it’s great.”
Was he returning as a host?
No. Koch had left his Sunrise presenting role in June 2023 after 21 years on breakfast television, according to 7NEWS. Seven West Media said Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington took over co-hosting duties from him on 12 June 2023. His December visit was a guest appearance rather than a change to the hosting line-up. Seven West Media’s 4 December 2023 release named Barr and Shirvington as the co-hosts.

What did “Australia’s top breakfast TV show” mean?
Seven West Media described Sunrise as Australia’s number-one breakfast show in its December 2023 release. The broadcaster said the programme had been number one for 20 consecutive years and reached more than 2.27 million Australians weekly. Those are the network’s own dated claims; the sources available here do not independently verify the ranking.

On 26 January 2024, 7NEWS reported another surprise Sunrise visit, this one after Koch was named a Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to media as a television presenter and to economic journalism. That was a separate appearance from the December 2023 health-insurance discussion. The January report also cited career totals of 16,000 hours of live television, more than 5,300 shows and about 50,000 interviews; those figures describe his broader career, not the December guest segment. 7NEWS reported on the January appearance on 26 January 2024.
