Before the show, Sweden was reported as the betting-market favorite, with Austria as its main challenger. The forecast and the result were not the same.
Who won Eurovision 2025?
JJ, representing Austria with “Wasted Love,” won the 69th Eurovision Song Contest. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) reported that he finished with 436 points. Israel placed second with 357 points, and Estonia placed third with 356. The EBU’s Grand Final announcement confirms the result.

The contest was hosted by EBU member SRG SSR in Basel, Switzerland. Twenty-six countries competed in the Grand Final. JJ’s official participant profile lists “Wasted Love” as his entry and records Austria’s first-place Grand Final finish and fifth-place Second Semi-Final finish. The song’s music and lyrics are credited to Johannes Pietsch, Teodora Spiric, and Thomas Turner.
Who was favored before the final?
A pre-final report by Kurier/APA described Sweden as the overall favorite in betting markets, with Austria in second place. That was a snapshot of expectations before the 17 May final—not a guarantee, nor a universal measure of every forecast. Kurier’s report also distinguished expectations for the jury from those for the audience vote, which is important when comparing a forecast with the final result.

#1 Best Overall
| Question | Before the final | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Overall winner | Sweden was reported as the favorite; Austria was the main challenger, according to Kurier/APA’s pre-final betting-market coverage. | Austria’s JJ won with 436 points. |
| Jury vote | Kurier/APA reported a separate jury forecast; it was a time-specific betting snapshot, not a certain outcome. | JJ earned 258 jury points, according to Eurovision’s official winner coverage. |
| Audience vote | Kurier/APA reported a separate audience-vote forecast; this should not be conflated with its overall-winner forecast. | Eurovision’s winner’s press-conference report gives JJ 178 televote points. |
Eurovision’s official accounts differ on JJ’s televote total: one winner report says 176, while the press-conference report says 178. The latter figure is consistent with the reported total of 436 when added to 258 jury points; 258 plus 176 does not equal 436. The sources do not explain the discrepancy.
What the voting split tells us
The final score combines jury and televote points. JJ’s reported jury lead and overall victory show why separate forecasts for the jury and audience do not by themselves settle who will win the contest. Sweden’s pre-final overall-favorite status and Austria’s eventual win are both part of the story; the betting report should be read as a dated expectation, not a failed promise or a certainty.
After the contest, Austrian broadcaster ORF offered interpretations of the outcome, including that Sweden had been overestimated and that competing musical styles may have affected audience appeal. Those are the broadcaster’s analyses, not quantified findings establishing why voters chose as they did. ORF’s post-final commentary presents that perspective.
