Ethel Cain is both the music project of singer-songwriter Hayden Anhedönia and the name of a fictional preacher’s daughter at the center of her Southern Gothic stories. The work moves from the dark, expansive narrative of Preacher’s Daughter to the teenage romance of its prequel, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, and the austere experimental sound of Perverts. That range—not a promise about what comes next—is what makes Cain’s catalog so compelling.
Who is Ethel Cain?
Ethel Cain is the artistic project of Hayden Anhedönia, a singer-songwriter who uses the character Ethel to build a fictional world shaped by Southern Gothic, horror and the religious culture in which Anhedönia grew up. The character’s story is emotionally resonant, but it is not a literal account of the artist’s life. In a 2025 Guardian interview, Anhedönia described the separation this way: “I see Ethel Cain as a piece of me that I separate from myself and discard, so that I can make good decisions in life.”
That distinction matters when listening to the albums as a connected story. Anhedönia has said she goes by Hayden in the room and treats Ethel as a character in performances and imagery. The songs can draw on personal feeling without turning the character’s plot into autobiography. The Creative Independent interview offers a complementary first-person account of that creative boundary.
What is Preacher’s Daughter about?
Released in 2022, Preacher’s Daughter is the central entry point into Cain’s fictional world. It follows a teenage preacher’s daughter who flees a restrictive upbringing, then meets a boyfriend who ultimately murders her. The Guardian describes the 76-minute album as ending in cannibalism, a horrific turn that belongs to the character’s story rather than Anhedönia’s biography.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The music resists a single genre label. Hazy ambient passages, gothic country and doom metal give the album a slow, unsettled scale; “American Teenager” provides a brighter, more immediate heartland-rock contrast. That shift between recognizable pop-rock and heavier, stranger textures helps the record feel like a narrative rather than a collection of songs chasing one sound.
The album’s audience grew beyond its original niche, and its 2025 vinyl rerelease reached the Top 10 in the US, UK, Australia and the Netherlands, according to the Guardian. That reported chart placement indicates renewed visibility; it does not by itself establish sales totals or audience size.

What should you listen to after Preacher’s Daughter?
| Album | Place in the story | Sound and listening feel | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preacher’s Daughter (2022) | The central narrative: Ethel flees home and encounters a violent fate. | Ambient music, gothic country and doom metal, with the heartland-rock anthem “American Teenager”; 76 minutes, as described by The Guardian in 2023. | A first full-album listen, if you want the main story and can make room for a long, dark record. |
| Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You (2025) | A prequel set in 1986, about Ethel’s first love and the broken world around the couple. | A more pop-oriented, youthful opening gives way to slower instrumentals and power ballads; W Magazine describes a path from folk to shoegaze. | Listeners who want to move earlier in the character’s life and hear a more romantic, gradually expansive record. |
| Perverts (2025) | An experimental work that sits alongside the narrative albums as a very different listening experience. | Post-industrial noise, drones, layered reverb, glacial tempos, long silences and ritualistic vocal passages; the Associated Press describes it as 90 minutes. | Listeners drawn to challenging ambient, noise and slow, sparse arrangements rather than a conventional narrative album. |
How does the prequel change the story?
Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You is the second installment of the Preacher’s trilogy and takes the story back to summer 1986. Rather than retell the debut’s events, it follows Ethel as an insecure teenager experiencing first love in a town and world already marked by damage. Its youthfulness is not a promise of an uncomplicated romance: the setting remains part of the story’s Southern Gothic atmosphere.
The album’s shape also changes the listening experience. Its opening is more pop-oriented, then the arrangements slow and widen into instrumentals and power ballads. W Magazine’s 2025 interview frames the record as a Southern Gothic epic moving from folk toward shoegaze, a useful description of its breadth rather than a strict genre map.

Why is Perverts so different?
Released in January 2025, Perverts occupies a harsher, more abstract corner of Cain’s work. The Associated Press describes post-industrial noise, glacial tempos, layered reverb, drones and ritualistic vocal passages across its 90-minute runtime. Anhedönia plays multiple instruments, including hurdy-gurdy. Long silences and sparse structures make the record less like a conventional set of songs and more like a sustained, unsettling environment.
The contrast with the heartland-pop lift of “American Teenager” is not a contradiction to resolve; it is evidence of how much ground the project covers. A listener looking for another narrative in the vein of Preacher’s Daughter may prefer the prequel. Someone curious about Cain’s most austere, challenging textures may find Perverts the more revealing next step.

What has Cain said about fame and online fandom?
Anhedönia has spoken about the friction between intimate, serious work and the fast-moving online culture around it. In a 2023 Guardian interview, she said she wanted a smaller fanbase, described frustration when serious posts or quiet songs were met as memes, and said attention had spilled over to friends and family. In 2025, she discussed anxiety that the debut’s violent themes would be reduced to jokes, while also saying she had made peace with releasing work and letting audiences interpret it.
Her criticism is a personal perspective, not a verdict on every listener. In a 2025 W Magazine interview, she put her broader concern about online culture this way: “The entire Internet has gone from being a place of creative community to a giant billboard.” The tension in those remarks is part of the public story around Cain: she has described the costs of sudden visibility while continuing to release work open to interpretation.
