Donald Trump did not attend Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026. Before the game, he said the trip to Santa Clara was too far and that he would go if the event were closer. In the same interview, he criticized halftime headliner Bad Bunny and pregame performer Green Day—but contemporaneous reporting said he did not cite the artists as the reason for missing the game.
Why did Trump say he would miss Super Bowl LX?
In a January 2026 Oval Office interview with the New York Post, Trump said the trip to the Bay Area was too long. As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, he said, “It’s just too far away,” and, “I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter.” That is his stated explanation; it does not establish his private motive.
What did Trump say about Bad Bunny and Green Day?
Trump also objected to the performers chosen for the event. The Los Angeles Times quoted him saying, “I’m anti-them,” and, “I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.” Bad Bunny, whose birth name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was booked to headline the halftime show. Green Day, the band fronted by Billie Joe Armstrong, was scheduled to perform before kickoff.
The distinction matters: Trump condemned the artists’ selection, but EFE’s contemporaneous account of the interview reported that he said they were not the reason he would miss the game. The reporting supports describing distance as his stated reason and the artist comments as a separate criticism—not claiming that the performers caused his absence.

How did the NFL respond to the Bad Bunny booking?
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the choice and said the league was not considering dropping Bad Bunny. In remarks reported by the Associated Press via NFL.com, Goodell called the decision “carefully thought through” and said, “I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism.” He added, “We’re confident it’s going to be a great show,” and said Bad Bunny understood the platform and could help create “a united moment.” These were Goodell’s pregame comments, not a later announcement about the league’s policy.

The event also drew political debate beyond the performers. In a February 3 pregame report, the Associated Press said more than 184,000 people had signed a MoveOn petition urging the NFL to denounce the potential presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the event. That figure is a petition-signature count reported before the game, not a poll or a measure of public opinion.
