Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump did not participate in the 2017 Kennedy Center Honors activities. The White House announced the decision on August 19, saying it was intended to let the honorees celebrate “without any political distraction.” The announcement concerned the 2017 event, not a later Honors ceremony.
What did the White House announce?
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president and first lady had decided not to participate in that year’s Honors activities. The White House’s stated reason was to allow the honorees to celebrate without political distraction; that public explanation does not establish their private motives. CBS News reported the announcement on August 19, 2017.
The scope matters: the announcement said they would not participate in the year’s activities, rather than describing a decision to miss only the gala.
Who was being honored, and when was the gala?
The 2017 ceremony marked the Kennedy Center Honors’ 40th year. The gala was scheduled for December 3, 2017, with five honorees:

What was the political context?
Before the announcement, Lear had said he would attend the gala but not the customary White House reception, and de Lavallade had also declined the White House invitation. Contemporary coverage placed the president’s decision amid political tensions and criticism after the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. That context helps explain the moment in which the announcement was made, but it does not prove a single cause for the decision. NPR reported on the decision and the surrounding context.
How did Kennedy Center leaders respond?
Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein and president Deborah F. Rutter issued a joint statement welcoming the administration’s nonparticipation. They said it “graciously signaled its respect for the Kennedy Center” and would ensure the gala remained a special moment for the honorees. The Washington Post reported their response.

Is this about the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors?
No. This headline concerns the 2017 announcement. A separate Associated Press report published October 2, 2026, described the 49th annual ceremony as scheduled for December 7 at Capital One Arena, with honorees still to be announced at the time. Those later details do not establish whether Trump will attend that ceremony. The Associated Press report covers the 2026 event.
