Disney showed the first reported footage of Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel in its live-action Tangled at the D23 entertainment showcase on August 14, 2026. The film stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, and its announced U.S. theatrical release date is March 31, 2028.
What the first look showed
Attendees at Disney’s D23 showcase at the Honda Center in Anaheim saw brief footage of Croft and Hahn in character, ABC News reported on August 15, 2026. The sequence began with Rapunzel’s long blonde hair moving down medieval stairs before revealing Croft. Hahn then appeared from behind a door in a tunnel-like alley and called, “Rapunzel!” (ABC News.)
Hahn told Good Morning America chief meteorologist Ginger Zee at D23, “I’m very humbled and flattered to be asked to be in this, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
Hahn’s casting was announced before D23
The D23 footage was a first look at Hahn as Gothel on screen, not the announcement that she had joined the film. Disney announced her casting on March 10, 2026, in a collaborative Instagram video, according to ABC News.

How the remake connects to the animated film
Disney Animation released Tangled on November 24, 2010. In the original, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel, Zachary Levi voiced Flynn Rider, and Donna Murphy voiced Mother Gothel. Disney’s synopsis describes Flynn hiding in Rapunzel’s tower, being taken hostage, and striking a deal with her before they set off together. Rapunzel is a tower-bound teenager with 70 feet of magical golden hair, according to Disney Animation.
