Disney argued that the First Amendment protected its decision to separate The Mandalorian from Gina Carano’s social-media speech. A federal court denied the company’s motion to dismiss in 2024, allowing Carano’s lawsuit to proceed without deciding who was right. The parties settled in August 2025 and agreed to end the case; public reporting did not disclose the terms, and there was no public merits verdict in the sources reviewed.
What Disney argued
In its motion to dismiss, Disney and the other defendants argued that the First Amendment protected their right not to associate their artistic expression with Carano’s speech. That was the defendants’ legal position—not a court finding that the company’s explanation was correct. Read the defendants’ motion to dismiss.
What Carano alleged in her lawsuit
Carano filed suit on February 6, 2024, against The Walt Disney Company, Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC, and Huckleberry Industries (US), Inc. Her complaint alleged wrongful termination and related harms, and sought damages and equitable relief. Those were allegations and requested remedies, not facts established by a court. Read the complaint.
The complaint opened with a pointed Star Wars-themed accusation: “A short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, Defendants made it clear that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable in their empire, and that those who dared to question or failed to fully comply would not be tolerated.” This was Carano’s pleading rhetoric, not a judicial conclusion.

- The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords are scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu. Some flashing lights sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers.
What the court decided—and what it did not
On July 24, 2024, the court denied Disney’s motion to dismiss. A later order dated October 22, 2024, also confirmed the denial. Read the July order and the October order.
A motion-to-dismiss ruling lets a case continue past the initial pleading stage; it is not a trial verdict. The denial did not establish that Disney’s stated reason was false, that Carano’s allegations were proven, or that Disney was liable. The competing accounts remained unresolved by that ruling.

- The Journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
How the case ended
On August 7, 2025, the parties agreed to end the case and stipulated to dismissal with prejudice, according to the Associated Press. The AP reported that the agreement’s specific terms were not made public. The available reporting does not establish a payment, reinstatement, or a court finding on the merits. Read the AP’s settlement report.
Lucasfilm said Carano had been respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and said it looked forward to identifying opportunities to work with her in the near future. That was the company’s public statement; it did not confirm a new role or contract. The AP report includes Lucasfilm’s statement.

What the settlement means for the dispute
The lawsuit ended without a public merits verdict in the sources reviewed. The settlement closed the case; by itself, it does not show which side’s account was right or establish liability, damages, or a guaranteed return to the franchise.
