The Roddenberry Archive’s 2022 demonstration let visitors explore a digital recreation of sets and props from Star Trek’s 1965 pilot, “The Cage.” It was an interactive reconstruction of the Enterprise environment—not a restoration of the original television episode. The project raises a larger question: how can digital preservation bring a vanished production back to view while treating the people whose likenesses it recreates with care?
What the Roddenberry Archive recreated
IEEE Spectrum described the Roddenberry Archive as a collaboration between the Gene Roddenberry Estate and OTOY, announced in 2021. Its first complete project, as reported in 2022, recreated sets, props and actors from “The Cage,” the 1965 pilot. Visitors at the convention demonstration could move through locations including the bridge and engineering in a 3D environment.
That distinction matters: reconstructing a set is not the same as restoring a film. The project recreated parts of the production’s environment and related character imagery; it did not restore or remaster the episode itself. The original program remains a separate historical object.
How the 2022 experience worked
At the convention, the demonstration ran locally on a PC using Unreal Engine and a game controller, according to IEEE Spectrum. Visitors navigated the recreated locations themselves. These are details of the iteration shown in 2022, not confirmed specifications for later releases.

OTOY’s August 25, 2022 announcement described the experience as an immersive, interactive 360-degree exploration of the filmed Enterprise locations, with 1:1-scale assets. It highlighted interactive elements including Captain Pike’s chair, the turbolift and the briefing-room display. OTOY said original “The Cage” director Robert Butler supervised the recreations and named Denise and Michael Okuda, Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman as archive curators.
The demonstration and the company’s description point to an approach different from simply watching archival footage: the viewer could inspect a reconstructed space from within it. OTOY also discussed future holographic viewing ambitions, but those statements describe a direction, not evidence that a consumer holographic version was available.

Preservation, access and the question of respect
The project was presented as a way to preserve and explore television history. In IEEE Spectrum’s account, OTOY founder and CEO Jules Urbach described the distribution approach at the time this way: “In order to stay in the noncommercial realm, we’re not putting this out there for people to download,” he said. Urbach also said, “Ideally, we’d like to do something at the Smithsonian.” That was an aspiration reported in 2022, not a confirmed Smithsonian agreement.
Recreating performers who have died adds an ethical dimension to preservation. Actor Lawrence Selleck, who portrayed Spock in the project, described the personal meaning of the role: “The kid inside me had always dreamed of being Spock,” he told IEEE Spectrum. He also stressed the seriousness with which he approached the work: “You don’t take this lightly.”

Selleck’s comments are his own perspective, not a universal consent rule or a formal policy for digital likenesses. The reporting suggests why context matters: a preservation-focused exploration can feel different from inserting a recreated performer into a newly commercialized film appearance. It does not settle how every performer, estate or audience would judge such uses.
What changed after the convention demonstration
On April 27, 2023, OTOY announced an online archive portal featuring additional life-size Enterprise bridge recreations and documentary and featurette material. The company described the bridges as 1:1-scale, “in-universe” 360-degree recreations. This update records what OTOY announced on that date; it does not establish whether the portal or experience is accessible today.

The story’s progression is therefore from a locally run, controller-navigated demonstration in 2022 to a portal announcement in 2023. Neither the 2023 announcement nor the earlier holographic ambitions establish present-day access or a completed holographic installation.

“The Cage” is part of television history, but many viewers encounter it through the finished episode rather than the physical spaces built for filming. A navigable reconstruction offers a different way to examine production design: the viewer can look around a room, move between locations and engage with selected objects instead of following only the camera’s framing.

That benefit should not be mistaken for a substitute for the original episode. A digital recreation is an interpretation assembled from production references and creative decisions; it can make a set legible in new ways, but it is not the same evidence as the filmed performance or the surviving historical materials. The project’s value lies in adding a mode of exploration while keeping those distinctions clear.
