The Little Things never confirms who killed the women at the center of its investigation. Albert Sparma is the detectives’ chief suspect, but the film does not prove he is the killer—or identify anyone else as the murderer. Director John Lee Hancock has said he wanted to resist the crime thriller’s usual definitive reveal and victory, leaving viewers room to interpret the ending.
What happens to Sparma—and what the film proves
Los Angeles detective Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) and deputy sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) become fixated on Albert Sparma (Jared Leto), a repairman they suspect of killing multiple women. Sparma denies being the killer. At a desert location, Baxter kills him, and Deke helps conceal what happened. Netflix Tudum’s ending summary recounts those events, but they do not establish Sparma’s guilt.
The distinction matters: Baxter’s decision is not a confession from Sparma, and the film does not supply decisive evidence tying him to the murders. The killer’s identity remains unresolved.
Why Deke sends Baxter a barrette
Afterward, Deke sends Baxter a barrette associated with victim Ronda Rathbun. It appears to offer the reassurance Baxter needs, but it is new—not the victim’s original barrette. It therefore cannot prove Sparma was the killer. Deke’s gesture helps Baxter live with what happened; it does not solve the case.

The barrette also sharpens the film’s moral ambiguity. Deke is not delivering reliable forensic evidence: he is helping conceal Baxter’s killing of Sparma and giving him a false basis for relief. The gesture may be compassionate, self-protective, or both, but none of those possibilities establishes who committed the murders.
What John Lee Hancock said about the ending
Hancock has described the film as an attempt to avoid the standard third-act pattern in which the villain is definitively identified and the hero conclusively wins. In a 2021 first-person Los Angeles Times essay, he framed the creative challenge this way: “But can you both embrace and subvert a genre in a way that is non-formulaic yet satisfying?”

He said he was drawn to 1970s films with complicated characters and less formulaic resolutions. He also identified obsession, compulsion, and redemption as themes in The Little Things. Those are Hancock’s descriptions of his aims, not instructions that every viewer must reach the same interpretation.
In a 2021 TheWrap interview, Hancock recalled that someone at Warner Bros. had once told him, “We’ll make this movie if you’ll change the ending so we know for a fact that the good guy is victorious.” That exchange is Hancock’s recollection of the conversation; it is not independent confirmation of a studio position. He said the finished film ends with real ambiguity.

What viewers can—and cannot—conclude
Sparma is a plausible suspect within the story: the detectives focus on him, and his behavior invites suspicion. But suspicion is not proof. The film withholds the evidence that would turn a theory about him, or anyone else, into a confirmed answer.
Viewers can weigh interpretations by separating what is shown from what characters believe. Deke and Baxter are deeply invested in the case, and that fixation affects how they see events. The false barrette and the concealment of Sparma’s death are part of the ending, but neither proves who killed Rathbun or the other victims.

Hancock has said he accepts that viewers may read the story differently—including, he noted, his younger self. The ambiguity is therefore not a hidden solution supplied by the film’s final scene: it is the unresolved space between the detectives’ suspicions, their actions, and what the evidence establishes.

Hancock recalled writing the screenplay toward the end of 1992 and said his copy carried a Writers Guild of America registration date in spring 1993. When he returned to it later, he reconsidered why he had written it. His reflections help explain his interest in obsession and in a conclusion that refuses easy certainty, but they do not settle the killer’s identity.

In a Directors Guild of America report published January 28, 2021, the DGA described a virtual Q&A Hancock held the previous day, moderated by director Karyn Kusama. Hancock discussed collaboration with cinematographer John Schwartzman, production designer Michael Corenblith, and costume designer Daniel Orlandi, including how they coordinated the film’s palette and wardrobe early in preparation. Those choices contribute to the film’s atmosphere; they do not provide a separate answer to the mystery. Read the DGA report.
