How the released film ends
In the theatrical film, Simba returns to confront Scar, defeats him and the hyenas, and reclaims his place as king. Disney’s official film page describes adult Simba as reclaiming the throne, while D23’s plot summary recounts Scar’s deception, Simba’s exile, and his return to take his place as king.
Disney dates the film to June 24, 1994. D23 lists a limited release on June 15, 1994, followed by a general release on June 24.
What the reported earlier ending changes
A summary of a purported earlier version says Scar throws Simba from Pride Rock and then dies in a fire. If accurate, that is a sharply different fate for Simba from the released film’s restoration ending. The account does not establish a verified, scene-by-scene transcript, so those details should be treated as a reported draft or storyboard version—not as confirmed final screenplay text.

What the surviving draft material can—and cannot—confirm
The Lion King WWW Archive’s movie-scripts page says early J.T. Allen and Ron Bass drafts date to early 1990 and notes that a working script differs slightly from the screen version. It also links a May 23, 1990 draft PDF. The existence of early scripts makes it useful to distinguish a draft from the released movie, but the reported Simba-and-fire ending cannot be treated as authenticated draft text on the basis of the available summary alone.
Was the ending changed because it was too dark?
That explanation is not established by the sources cited here. The reported version is darker in its described events, but that alone does not prove why the filmmakers changed or abandoned it. Without an attributable production account, it is safer to say the earlier ending is reported—not that it was cut for being too dark.
