Ian Watkins, the former Lostprophets singer, died at HMP Wakefield on 11 October 2025 after prison staff reported an assault. West Yorkshire Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. The latest located reporting, dated 22 May 2026, said the jury in the murder trial of two men had been discharged and that the case would be retried; it did not report a verdict.
What happened to Ian Watkins in prison?
West Yorkshire Police said officers were called to HMP Wakefield at 9:39 a.m. on 11 October 2025 after staff reported an assault on a prisoner. Watkins, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a homicide investigation was under way. The Irish Times reported the police account that day.
Police initially described an assault but did not publicly specify a weapon in the statement quoted by the newspaper. Early media reports attributed the use of a knife to sources. At the opening of the inquest on 24 October 2025, a post-mortem report was said to have recorded the cause of death as an incision to the neck. That detail comes from the inquest reporting, not the initial police statement. The Independent reported the inquest opening.
What was the latest reported status of the murder trial?
On 22 May 2026, the jury in the trial of Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth was discharged for legal reasons. Both men denied murder. Reports said the case would be retried; the jury’s discharge was not a finding of guilt or innocence. The Guardian and ITV News reported the development.

The latest located reports establish the position only as of 22 May 2026. They do not establish whether a retrial later took place or what its outcome was. Mr Justice Hilliard told jurors, as reported by ITV News: “Very reluctantly, I’m going to discharge you and the case will have to be re-tried.”
What was known about the inquest?
Coroner Oliver Longstaff opened the inquest and adjourned it pending the criminal process. The report does not establish a final inquest conclusion. Longstaff said it was uncertain whether the inquest would need to resume after the criminal proceedings. The Independent’s report quoted him saying: “Whether an inquest into the death requires to be resumed following the conclusion of that criminal process is a matter of complete speculation and remains to be seen.”

Why was Watkins in prison?
Watkins was sentenced in December 2013 to 29 years in prison, followed by six years on licence, after admitting child sexual offences. The Irish Times reported the sentence.
