Yes. The animated Pink Panther spoke briefly in some theatrical cartoons, and he had a more sustained speaking role in a 1993 syndicated TV series voiced by Matt Frewer. But silence and pantomime remained the character’s defining style.
Which Pink Panther are we talking about?
The question is about the animated pink cat, not the diamond in Blake Edwards’s 1963 film or its human characters. The film’s title refers to the jewel at the center of its story; the Panther appeared as an animated figure in the opening credits. PBS’s program transcript describes that distinction.
Did the cartoon Panther speak in the original shorts?
Yes, though his lines were exceptions rather than a regular feature. A contemporary Los Angeles Times report from August 29, 1993 says the Panther had uttered a few words in one of the original theatrical shorts. An Animation World Network retrospective says he spoke in several shorts and describes the creators’ preference for pantomime.
A later secondary account names Sink Pink and Pink Ice as examples, but the performer of the brief Sink Pink line is disputed in later listings. Those titles are therefore best treated as reported examples, not as settled voice-credit history. The 1993 newspaper report confirms the earlier speech but does not identify the short.

When did he get a more sustained voice?
The major later exception was the 1993 syndicated television series. Matt Frewer was selected to voice the Panther after more than 200 actors auditioned, according to the Los Angeles Times. That figure describes the audition pool for this role, not a general measure of casting.
The change was deliberate: the series gave the character an extended voice performance, unlike the occasional brief lines in theatrical shorts. Animation World Network’s retrospective quotes creator David DePatie explaining that the syndicator required the Panther to talk. The sources disagree on how many installments the series had, so there is no reliable episode total to give here.

Why is the Pink Panther usually remembered as silent?
His comedy was built largely around visual action and pantomime, not dialogue. That approach became the character’s signature in the theatrical cartoons, so the handful of short lines—and later the speaking 1993 series—stand out precisely because they depart from the familiar format.
