“The Well” turns communication into part of its suspense: the Doctor signs with Aliss, while soldiers use uniform caption displays as they investigate Midnight.

“The Well” makes communication part of its horror story—and its most affecting choice is simple: the Doctor signs to Aliss. Rose Ayling-Ellis, who plays the deaf survivor, says that decision helps Aliss trust him because he meets her halfway. Around that direct connection, the episode uses caption displays on soldiers’ uniforms to show how communication can shape both a tense investigation and the relationships inside it.

A Midnight return with a different center

The Doctor and Belinda arrive with a platoon at Colony Base 15, a mining settlement on planet 6-7-6-7. Its diamonds have been mined; its people are gone, except for Aliss Fenly, the deaf base cook. The Doctor discovers that the planet is Midnight, the setting of his earlier encounter with a hostile, unseen presence. The official episode synopsis lays out the connection and the new danger around the well.

That link gives returning viewers a reason to feel uneasy, but the episode’s focus is not simply on revisiting an old monster. Its smaller story is about a group trying to understand what happened at the base while communicating across different needs and levels of trust. Engadget praises that character-focused approach and the way accessibility is woven into the narrative; GamesRadar, by contrast, questions how much the Midnight connection adds, arguing that this entity operates differently from the one in the earlier story. Those are competing critical readings, not a settled verdict on the sequel’s value.

Signing changes the relationship, not just the dialogue

Aliss’s deafness is not a detail the Doctor works around while the plot proceeds elsewhere. He communicates with her through sign language, meeting her directly rather than treating access as a problem for someone else to solve. In an official interview, Ayling-Ellis explains why that matters to the character: “That’s why I think Aliss trusts the Doctor straight away, because he signs to her. He’s meeting her halfway; he’s going into her world to communicate with her. So, you automatically build that trust.”

That observation gets at what makes the scene work. Signing is not merely a way to deliver information to the audience; it shows the Doctor making an effort before he asks Aliss to rely on him. The story also gives the cast a basis for that choice: Christopher Chung, who plays Cassio, said Ayling-Ellis taught him British Sign Language, “as she did with all of us, little bits here and there,” according to the official cast preview. That comment confirms some cast preparation, though it does not establish its extent or level.

Caption displays make access part of the suspense

The soldiers’ uniforms provide live speech-to-text displays. Engadget notes a particularly practical moment: a soldier gets Aliss’s attention by placing a message on a screen within her eye line. That detail makes access visible as an action in the scene rather than an invisible convenience. The displays help the group communicate, but the Doctor’s signing does something different: it builds a personal connection that a screen alone cannot supply.

The two approaches also serve the episode’s pacing. Captioning can carry information quickly as the platoon investigates; signing puts emphasis on the act of listening and responding. Together, they make communication part of the story’s mechanics, not a pause from them. The uniforms’ live captions are fictional devices in the episode, not evidence that real-world uniforms or captioning systems work this way.

The well, the threat, and the ending

The unseen entity is associated with a deep well, and Aliss’s inability to hear protects her from its influence. The Doctor uses mercury to create a reflection and free her. Later, the entity appears to move to Belinda; Shaya shoots her to transfer it, then jumps into the well. The official synopsis closes with a further hint of danger aboard the troopers’ ship, leaving the story with a sting beyond the apparent resolution.

These turns keep the episode rooted in science-fiction horror, but the communication choices are what give its danger a human shape. Aliss is not just a clue to the mystery or a mechanism for escaping it: the Doctor’s willingness to communicate on her terms changes how quickly she can trust him. That is the episode’s clearest achievement, and the reason its title could have been about the well alone but is not.
