The planned Doctor Who Christmas 2026 special has been cancelled. The BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf announced on June 10, 2026, that they would not proceed with the episode. Christmas 2026 was its previously announced window, not a current release date; no replacement date, confirmed plot or trailer for that cancelled episode has been announced in the cited updates.
Is the Doctor Who Christmas special still happening?
No. In an official update on June 10, 2026, the BBC said it had collectively decided with Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf not to go ahead with the previously announced Christmas episode. The BBC said it would put the programme out to competitive tender as it secured the show’s next phase, choosing to invest in its long-term future rather than use a one-off special to bridge the gap. Read the official Doctor Who update.
The BBC said details of the tender would be announced later. The update does not name a replacement production partner, commission, distributor or release schedule, so none should be treated as confirmed.
When was the planned special supposed to come out?
On October 28, 2025, the BBC announced that Doctor Who would return “at Christmas 2026” with a special written by Russell T Davies and produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios for the BBC. That announcement was superseded by the June 2026 cancellation: Christmas 2026 is no longer a release date for that episode. See the original announcement.

There is no replacement air date in the cited official update. It also does not establish when the next series will be commissioned or released.
What was the plot, and is there a trailer?
No confirmed plot or trailer for the cancelled 2026 episode is established by the cited updates. The Associated Press reported that Davies said the episode had not been written and no actor had been approached to play the Doctor. That means any purported plot, cast list or episode title for the abandoned plan should be treated as speculation, not confirmed news. Read the Associated Press report.
