The shift can feel like a break in the season’s momentum, but it also puts Matt’s struggle over who he is at the center of the story.
What happens in “With Interest” and “Excessive Force”?
Episode 5: “With Interest”
Matt becomes caught in a robbery and hostage crisis at New York Mutual Bank alongside Yusuf Khan. The danger is contained largely within the bank, and Matt responds with heightened senses, careful planning, and physical skill rather than putting on the Daredevil suit. Daniel Chin’s recap at The Ringer describes the robbery as centered on a diamond and notes that Matt uses a red ski mask taken from one of the robbers.

Episode 6: “Excessive Force”
The story pivots to Muse, whose blood-painted murals signal a far grimmer threat. The episode advances several ongoing threads, including Wilson Fisk’s response to the violence and Angela’s connection to Hector Ayala’s investigation and disappearance. After learning that Muse has taken a client’s niece, Matt retrieves his suit and confronts him. Muse escapes, so Matt’s return is a decisive change in direction rather than a resolution of the threat, as both Chin and Shirley Li’s Atlantic analysis describe.
Does the tonal shift work?
Episode 5’s bank crisis is comparatively lighter and more self-contained; episode 6 brings serial-killer horror and violent escalation. Whether that contrast feels purposeful or misplaced is the pair’s central question.

Li reads the alternation as a way to examine Matt’s identity and purpose. In that interpretation, the bank episode matters because it shows Matt acting to protect people without the familiar costume and persona. His restraint is not an absence of action; it is part of his attempt to live differently.
Jarrod Jones of The A.V. Club sees the placement less favorably, arguing that the comic, bottle-style bank story interrupts the tone and momentum established earlier in the season. That objection has force: a mostly contained crisis can feel like a detour when the larger story is building toward consequences for Matt and Fisk.
Chin offers a more connective reading: episode 5 moves Matt toward putting the suit back on, while episode 6 advances the season’s major plotlines. The pair therefore asks viewers to accept a pause in the larger conflict as character groundwork. If that groundwork feels persuasive, the tonal jump adds dimension; if it does not, the bank story can seem like a speed bump before the Muse plot resumes.

Matt’s return to the suit: catharsis or unfinished business?
The return lands because Matt has spent episode 5 attempting to handle danger without becoming Daredevil again. In episode 6, the threat to someone connected to his work as a lawyer pushes him back toward the role he had tried to leave behind. The change is legible as a choice under pressure, not simply a costume reveal.

That escape keeps the sequence from functioning as a clean victory. Matt has resumed the fight, but the problem that drove him back into the suit remains active.
How does the action and visual execution land?
The episodes offer different kinds of action: episode 5 leans on Matt’s senses, tactics, and close-quarters physicality inside the bank; episode 6 builds toward the more forceful return of the masked vigilante. The contrast makes the change in Matt’s methods visible as well as thematic.

Chin criticizes parts of episode 6’s presentation, particularly the slow motion and the rooftop-to-subway movement, as visually uncanny. That is a critical judgment rather than a consensus verdict, but it identifies a meaningful point of friction: the scene is meant to make Matt’s return feel kinetic and overwhelming, and its effects may instead draw attention to their construction.

Yusuf Khan and references to Ms. Marvel bring wider Marvel continuity into the bank episode. Chin and Jones both discuss that crossover texture. Its value depends on whether it enriches the people and predicament in front of Matt or pulls attention toward the larger franchise. In a story built around a local hostage crisis, those references work best when they remain background texture rather than the episode’s main attraction.
Verdict: a meaningful contrast, with a momentum cost
“With Interest” and “Excessive Force” are not a seamless two-part escalation. Their sharp tonal difference is also the point of debate: the bank episode gives Matt room to act without the suit, while the Muse episode shows why he cannot keep that distance from vigilantism. Li’s thematic reading explains what the contrast can accomplish; Jones’s criticism captures why the placement may still feel disruptive. The pair is strongest as a study of Matt’s unresolved identity, and less assured when its self-contained pause and episode 6’s visual choices interrupt the forward drive.

For the series’ broader creative context, Disney’s March 4, 2025 announcement frames the show as a continuation of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s stories in New York’s street-level world. Marvel Studios television chief Brad Winderbaum described the action this way: “It’s all born out of character.” The same announcement quotes Charlie Cox on the pressure of having more to lose: “The idea of losing it can make you feel like you’re backed into a corner.” These comments concern the series overall, not specifically episodes 5 and 6.
