These 12 books offer distinct ways into Dalit history and the continuing struggle against caste oppression: poetry, fiction, memoir, and historical and political nonfiction. Scroll.in published its reading list on April 16, 2022; it is a dated set of recommendations, not a guarantee that every title or edition is currently available. The books range across languages, regions, and subjects, from labour and education to Dalit women’s movements and organized activism.

Dalit History Month is observed in April. Scroll describes its beginnings among a group of Dalit women in India, inspired by Black History Month, as a way to reclaim agency and bring silenced histories and lived experiences forward. IIHS Library likewise frames the observance as honoring Dalit and Bahujan histories, struggles, and contributions. Scroll.in’s 2022 list and IIHS Library’s 2026 exhibition provide the context for the selections below.

12 books on Dalit history, caste, and resistance

The list moves from poems and stories to individual and family memoirs, then to books about political thought and movements. Translator credits are included where Scroll provides them. The descriptions reflect the list’s framing rather than independent reviews.

  1. Love After Babel & Other Poems — Chandramohan S.

This poetry collection addresses caste atrocities, gendered violence, the beef controversy, and Islamophobia. It also considers how minority women can be excluded from mainstream feminist discourse.

Dalit literature beyond this 2022 list

The twelve titles are an entry point, not a complete canon or a current availability guide. IIHS Library’s exhibition Reclaiming Silenced Voices ran from April 1 to June 30, 2026, and presented literature addressing caste discrimination through memoir, poetry, essays, and fiction. Its bibliography includes works such as The Trauma of Caste, The Persistence of Caste, Fakira, and We Also Made History. See the IIHS Library exhibition and bibliography for a broader set of reading leads. Penguin Random House India has also published a Dalit History Month reading page discussing titles including The Trauma of Caste, Water in a Broken Pot, Fear and Other Stories, Vultures, Fakira, and Caste Matters; those are publisher recommendations.
