Casting directors Lucy Bevan and Allison Jones described the production constraint; Levy later said he had tried hard to make it work and found the decision painful.
Why wasn’t Dan Levy in Barbie?
Much of Greta Gerwig’s film was shot in London, and COVID-related constraints meant cast members needed to spend three months there. Casting director Allison Jones said that commitment ruled out Levy, Bowen Yang and Ben Platt. The Los Angeles Times reported the same explanation: the London schedule and restrictions kept Levy and other performers from taking a Ken role.

Jones told Vanity Fair the actors were disappointed: “They were, I’m not kidding, really bummed they couldn’t do it.” The account points to a practical scheduling obstacle, not a reported creative disagreement.
What did Levy say about missing the role?
In comments from a People interview reported by NOW Toronto on January 16, 2024, Levy said he tried to make the timing work: “Logistically could not make it work despite desperately trying to.” He described the decision as “a tough, tough day.”
