Yes. Dana Carvey said he came up with the ice-cream gag during the live performance, rather than rehearsing or planning it. The moment happened in the cold open of Saturday Night Live’s season 50 premiere, which aired September 28, 2024.
What happened in the SNL sketch?
The cold open featured Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff watching the vice-presidential debate. Carvey appeared as Joe Biden. Near the end of the sketch, he pressed his ice-cream cone into Rudolph’s face.
The episode was the season 50 premiere. The Associated Press’ September 28, 2024 coverage reports the premiere context and cast roles.
How did Carvey describe the unscripted moment?
Carvey recounted the gag on Superfly with Dana Carvey and David Spade. As reported by TheWrap on October 12, 2024, he had asked the prop master for a cone to hold during dress rehearsal, then received a larger one for the live show. He said the ice cream was not planned and described the decision: “I thought of it and did it within two seconds.”
Carvey also said, “I didn’t want to hurt her.” That is his account of his intention; it does not establish Rudolph’s private reaction. TheWrap’s report attributes these remarks to Carvey.
