Daniel Day-Lewis returned to the screen in the first trailer for Anemone, released August 21, 2025. It is his first acting role since Phantom Thread (2017), but the comeback also marks a father-son creative partnership: Day-Lewis co-wrote the drama with his son Ronan, who directs his first feature.

What the Anemone trailer reveals

The trailer introduces a story of isolation and family ties. The Associated Press identifies Day-Lewis’s character as Ray Stoker, a solitary man living in a remote cabin. His brother Jem, played by Sean Bean, arrives and urges Ray to return to his teenage son. The AP describes the father-son story as fictional, not autobiographical.

The studio’s description frames the film around connections between brothers, fathers, and sons. The Guardian reported additional setting and backstory details: the story takes place in late-1980s Yorkshire, and the brothers have a past as British paramilitaries in Northern Ireland. Those historical specifics come from the Guardian’s account rather than the studio synopsis.

A first feature for Ronan Day-Lewis—and a rare collaboration

Daniel and Ronan Day-Lewis co-wrote Anemone, with Ronan making his feature directorial debut. Focus Features and Plan B partnered on the film; Universal Pictures International was set to distribute it internationally on Focus Features’ behalf. The announced cast also includes Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green, alongside Sean Bean.

In an Associated Press interview, Daniel Day-Lewis recalled that the project grew beyond its original scope: “As we progressed through it, and it seemed less and less possible to contain it, like two fellas in a shed, it began to alarm me slightly.” The collaboration is central to the story of his return: this was not simply a new role, but a film developed with his son.

What Day-Lewis said about “retirement”

Day-Lewis announced in 2017 that he would stop working after Phantom Thread. At the New York Film Festival press conference on September 28, 2025, he pushed back on treating “retirement” as his own description: “Apparently I’ve been accused of retiring twice now, but it would never occur to me to use the word retirement… I made a fucking fool of myself by announcing that I was going to stop working, and you know, probably a bigger fool of myself coming back.”

That remark jokes about both the 2017 announcement and his return; it is not a new declaration that he is retiring again or a promise that he will take more roles. The 63rd New York Film Festival hosted Anemone’s world premiere. CBS Sunday Morning’s interview with Daniel and Ronan Day-Lewis, describing the story as following a man living in self-exile, aired October 5, 2025.

U.S. release dates announced for Anemone

Focus Features announced a U.S. theatrical release in select theaters on October 3, 2025, followed by an expansion on October 10, 2025. Those were the distributor’s announced dates, not upcoming release dates.

For the original announcement and film details, see Focus Features’ announcement of the partnership, its official Anemone film page, and its release-date announcement. The Associated Press interview provides further context on the film and the collaboration.
