Crystal Gayle has considered cutting her famously long hair, but her reasons and feelings have shifted over time. In a 1998 interview, she talked about muggy weather and the work of caring for it; later interview excerpts describe her attachment to it and her children’s reaction to the idea of a cut.
Why Crystal Gayle wanted to cut her hair in 1998
In a telephone interview published by the Deseret News on July 5, 1998, ahead of a July 11 performance with the Utah Symphony, Gayle said humid weather had made her think about cutting her hair. “Lately, with this heat here, I’ve wanted to cut it off,” she said.
She described a gradual plan rather than a dramatic change: “Lately I’ve wanted to cut off a few inches at a time and get it up to my waist and back.” The comments were about her thoughts at that time, not evidence that she made the cut.
Upkeep was part of the frustration
Gayle also spoke about the work involved in maintaining long hair. “The worst part is combing it out after I’ve washed it,” she said. She recalled that when she was in a hurry, her hair had tangled in a seat belt.

What later interviews say about changing her style
A later interview excerpt reproduced by Yahoo Entertainment has Gayle saying she still thought about finding a style that suited her at that point in her life, but found it difficult to part with hair she had kept for so long. The excerpt also gives her recollection that its greatest length was about four inches on the ground. The original publication date for that remark is not established by the available excerpt.
In a separate excerpt, Yahoo Entertainment reports Gayle saying her children had discouraged a cut: “I wanted to cut my hair once, but my kids said, ‘You can’t! You wouldn’t be Crystal Gayle,’” she recalled. The date of that underlying interview is likewise not established here. These later remarks are distinct from her 1998 comments about heat and upkeep.

Did Crystal Gayle actually cut her signature hair?
The documented remarks show that Gayle considered cutting her hair, not that she followed through with a major cut. In 1998 she described wanting to trim it gradually toward waist length; later excerpts emphasize how hard it was to part with a style associated with her for so long and how her children viewed it as part of her public identity.
