In July 2025, episode one of Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show appeared on Crunchyroll with subtitles that Anime Corner reported were generated by AI through a third-party vendor. The report said an unnamed Crunchyroll source described the vendor’s use of AI as violating its agreement with the company, and that Crunchyroll had opened an investigation. The vendor, contract, review process, and investigation’s outcome were not disclosed in the reporting.
What was reported in the July 2025 incident?
Anime Corner reported on July 3, 2025, that the first episode of Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show had appeared on Crunchyroll with AI-generated subtitles made by an unnamed third-party vendor. The outlet attributed the account of the vendor and its agreement to an unnamed source at Crunchyroll; neither the vendor nor the contract was identified or published. Anime Corner’s report said Crunchyroll had launched an investigation.

Anime Corner described grammar problems and errors in character and place names. It also reported that the German subtitle included the words “ChatGPT said:” as part of a character’s speech. These are details from the outlet’s account; they should not be read as an independent inspection of the episode or as evidence that all Crunchyroll subtitles were AI-generated.
What was said about the vendor agreement and review?
According to Anime Corner’s unnamed Crunchyroll source, the vendor’s agreement prohibited using AI-generated subtitles and included quality-control requirements. The source did not confirm whether the agreement permitted Crunchyroll to edit subtitles before release. Without the contract or further reporting, it is not possible to establish exactly what pre-release review took place or how responsibility was divided between the vendor and Crunchyroll.

How was this different from Crunchyroll’s October 2025 subtitle problems?
Crunchyroll faced another, separate subtitle-related issue in October 2025. The A.V. Club reported delays and subtitle problems across certain series on October 6–7. A Crunchyroll representative attributed those problems to internal system issues, saying they were “not by any change in how we create subtitles, use of new vendors or AI,” and said they had been resolved. The A.V. Club’s coverage describes a different event from the July report: the October explanation does not retract or resolve the July allegations.
| Date | Content described | Stated cause in the reporting | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 3, 2025 | Episode one of Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show | Anime Corner, citing an unnamed Crunchyroll source, reported that an unnamed third-party vendor used AI in violation of its agreement. | An investigation was reportedly launched; its final findings were not reported. |
| October 6–7, 2025 | Delays and subtitle problems across certain series | Crunchyroll attributed the issue to internal system problems, not a change in subtitle creation, a new vendor, or AI. | The company said the October problems had been resolved; this was separate from the July incident. |
What has Crunchyroll said about AI since then?
In June 2026 coverage, Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini was reported as saying the company was not using AI in its creative process, including subtitling and dubbing. GamesRadar+ also quoted him saying, “We are very clear in terms of what we will and will not do.” This is a later company position, not an independent audit and not evidence of the specific controls adopted after the July 2025 incident. GamesRadar+’s coverage reports his remarks.

What remains unknown?
- The vendor’s identity and the terms of its agreement with Crunchyroll.
- What pre-release checks were actually performed, or whether Crunchyroll edited the subtitles before they appeared.
- The investigation’s final findings and any specific corrective action.
- How many viewers encountered the reported subtitles or what the incident’s wider impact was; the cited coverage does not provide those figures.
What can viewers do about subtitle problems?
Crunchyroll’s general support guidance says subtitle availability can vary by language and regional licensing. For a subtitle issue, it recommends contacting support with the episode title, subtitle language, and viewing location. This advice is not confirmation that the subtitles discussed in the July report remain available or that a particular correction was made. See Crunchyroll’s subtitle troubleshooting page.
